A New Generation, a New Direction

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to unveil the second-generation GLB-class SUV on December 8, 2025, with the first version arriving as a fully electric model. Positioned as a successor to the EQB, the upcoming GLB EV represents a turning point in Mercedes’ compact SUV range. Gasoline and hybrid versions are still expected to follow later, but the automaker’s focus for now is on the electric variant and its advanced testing at the Mercedes Technology Center (MTC) in Sindelfingen, Germany.

Tested Against the Elements

Before its global debut, the GLB EV is undergoing intensive cold-weather trials in Mercedes’ state-of-the-art climatic wind tunnels. These facilities can replicate temperatures between -40°F and 104°F, with simulated blizzards generated by snow cannons and fans producing wind speeds up to 124 mph. Engineers can even adjust humidity levels and test the SUV at simulated speeds of up to 165 mph on a rolling road.

Mercedes explains, “Confident traction on snow-covered roads, supreme thermal comfort and clear visibility in snowy conditions are essential for winter driving.” The tests ensure that the GLB meets those standards, providing reliability in extreme environments. Images from the trials show the SUV encased in frost, concealing its final exterior design but hinting at a familiar boxy silhouette with rounded edges and a revised lighting layout.

Inside the “Welcome Home” Cabin

While the exterior remains mostly hidden, Mercedes has offered a clear view of the interior, arguably the new GLB’s biggest leap forward. The redesigned cabin introduces the optional MBUX Superscreen, a massive display stretching across the dashboard and bordered by circular air vents. Most functions are handled through the screen, though a handful of physical buttons remain below it for key controls.

Mercedes describes the cabin as offering a “Welcome Home” feeling, emphasizing warmth and comfort even in sub-zero conditions. The GLB continues to offer seating for five passengers, with an optional third row expanding capacity to seven. The door panels now feature a concave shape with floating controls and additional storage, while the center console adopts a similar “floating” design with space for wireless charging and cupholders.

Comfort and Climate Innovation

Mercedes has placed particular focus on cabin climate performance. The company claims that in 19°F conditions, the GLB’s interior now heats twice as fast as the previous model while using half the energy of the outgoing EQB. This improvement stems from a new heat pump system derived from the Vision EQXX concept, which draws thermal energy from the drivetrain, battery, and ambient air.

The HVAC system also intelligently prioritizes warming the upper body and hands first, enhancing comfort during cold starts. According to Mercedes, this efficient climate control not only improves comfort but also extends the EV’s driving range by reducing energy waste.

Details and Driver-Focused Features

Other refinements include a new steering wheel, shared with the GLC EV, featuring a rocker switch for cruise control and a roller knob for volume, both returning by customer request. The SUV offers more headroom and legroom in the first two rows, and the panoramic glass roof, standard on the electric version, can switch from clear to opaque at the touch of a button. An optional illuminated Mercedes star pattern on the roof lining evokes a more ambient, lounge-like atmosphere, a nod to Rolls-Royce’s Starlight Headliner concept but with a distinctly Mercedes aesthetic.

Looking Ahead

The world premiere of the new GLB is set for December 8, but Mercedes isn’t expected to rush it to market. The model likely won’t reach dealerships until spring 2026, and the availability of electric versus combustion variants may vary by region. Mercedes has not confirmed whether the electric GLB will launch in the U.S. immediately, noting ongoing evaluations amid changing EV market conditions and trade tariffs.

For now, the upcoming GLB EV previews the next stage in Mercedes-Benz’s electrification strategy—a compact SUV blending digital luxury, versatile practicality, and tested resilience for whatever climate it faces.
