Engineering and Design

Yvonne and Michael, a dynamic husband-and-wife team known as Wabi-sabi Overland, have transformed a 1987 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1300L into a state-of-the-art expedition camper. With their combined expertise in aerospace and engineering, they embarked on this ambitious project in 2017 and completed it by 2019, just in time for a journey north of the Arctic Circle. This extensive project reflects their passion for adventure, travel, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Built for Harsh Environments

Given their plan to travel through extreme cold, Yvonne and Michael equipped the Unimog with various cold weather modifications. These include double-glazed windows, a Planar 2D diesel air heater, and a Webasto engine block pre-heater, ensuring the vehicle remains functional and comfortable in sub-zero temperatures. The addition of a 600-watt solar array and 300 amp-hours of Battleborn lithium iron phosphate batteries underscores their commitment to off-grid living, providing sustainable power regardless of location.

Comfort and Functionality on the Road

The camper's interior features a kitchenette, dinette, double bed, and a bathroom complete with a toilet and shower. High-quality materials such as oak countertops, vinyl flooring, and a memory foam mattress ensure a homely feel. Essential amenities like a General Ecology water filtration system and ample storage space make it ideal for long-term travel. Notably, the interior also has air suspension seats, sound-deadening materials, and an Alpine stereo system for added comfort during travel.

Robust Mechanical Setup

Under the hood, the Unimog boasts a powerful 6.0-liter OM366A turbodiesel inline-six engine, paired with an eight-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. This setup allows for versatile driving modes, from efficient rear-wheel drive on highways to all-wheel drive for challenging off-road terrain. Enhancements such as an upgraded fuel primer pump and tuned injection pump further enhance the engine's reliability and performance, essential for extended expeditions.

Extensive Off-Road Features

Externally, the Unimog is equally impressive. It features a roof rack, roof turret hatch, Marston Mat sand ladders, and a front winch, making it well-prepared for any off-road challenge. The camper is mounted on a black-finished frame with a custom rear bumper and a snorkel air intake, ensuring durability and readiness for diverse terrains. Storage solutions include roof-rack-mounted aluminum foot lockers, providing ample space for gear.

Available for a New Adventure

Currently available for auction on Bring A Trailer, this unique Unimog is a rare opportunity for adventure enthusiasts. It includes recent service records, owner’s manuals, and a clean Carfax report. With a highest bid of $57,500 USD and two days remaining, this meticulously crafted vehicle, which previously sold for over $175,000 USD, is attracting considerable interest.
