Retro Special Edition Mercedes G-Class Is Actually Pretty Awesome
A modern G-Wagen with throwback flair, the “Stronger Than The 1980s” Edition brings 1980s nostalgia to a luxury off-roader—name notwithstanding.
Retro Redux
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a limited-run G-Class variant that borrows heavily from the early 1980s aesthetic—but with modern bones. Officially called the G-Class Edition Stronger Than The 1980s, this variant is available as either a diesel G450d (outside the U.S.) or the gasoline-powered G500/G550, and only 460 examples will be produced globally. That production figure is no accident: it’s a nod to the original G-Wagen's internal model code, W460.
From Concept to Production
The idea for this retro-inspired G-Wagen took shape in 2023 when Mercedes celebrated the production of the 500,000th G-Class with a one-off tribute modeled after the 1980s 280GE. That concept generated overwhelming interest. “Everyone loved that car, and everyone was asking, ‘Can I buy one?’” said G-Class product manager Selina Ströhle. Mercedes listened, translating that tribute into a street-legal homage.
Heritage Paint and Period-Correct Details
The available paint finishes—Agave Green, Colorado Beige, and Cream White—are all drawn from the G-Wagen’s earliest color palette. Agave Green in particular has historical resonance, having been used on both the 1980s originals and the 500,000th G-Class show vehicle. Paired with Magno Black trim on the grille, headlight surrounds, bumpers, wheel arches, and mirrors, the colors replicate the visual signature of the original W460 models. Mercedes even reintroduced amber lenses for the front fender indicators—though that required new certification to meet modern lighting standards.
Wheels, Tires, and Shrinking the Modern G
This G-Class rides on silver 18-inch five-spoke alloys wrapped in 265/60 Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires. Compared to the aggressive AMG G63 or even the standard G550, these wheels and tires visually scale down the SUV’s presence, making it look more purposeful and less ostentatious. Small changes—like black side moldings with no inlays and a retro canvas cover on the rear spare tire—add authenticity.
Nods to Graz and the Schöckl Trail
All 460 units will carry a “Schöckl Proved” badge near the B-pillar—an acknowledgment of the rugged Austrian mountain trail where every G-Class has been tested since 1979. The badge itself features 1980s-style graphics and even matches the exterior color of the specific unit. Door sills are engraved with the Schöckl’s coordinates and topography, reinforcing the model’s off-road roots.
Inside: Plaid, Wood, and Heritage Embossing
The interior swaps out the more familiar leather-and-carbon-fiber mix for checked cloth inserts over black leather seats, echoing patterns used on high-trim G-Wagens in the 1980s. There’s also dark open-pore wood across the console and doors. A metal plate on the console bears the “1 of 460” inscription, and another detail—less universally loved—is the “Stronger Than The 1980s” phrase carved into the dash grab handle.
Not Just a Costume
Despite the period-correct visuals, the G-Class Edition Stronger Than The 1980s is thoroughly modern underneath. It comes with a Burmester 3D surround sound system, Apple CarPlay, a sunroof, and a Nappa-leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel. There’s also an optional roof rack and ladder—carried over from the G Professional Package—though few other options are offered.
Pricing and Availability
While Mercedes hasn’t confirmed a U.S. price yet, the special edition starts at £152,815 in the U.K.—roughly $202,300. Given the base G550’s MSRP of $148,250, expect the heritage variant to land near $176,000 in the U.S., subject to final pricing and import costs.
