What You Learn After Pulling Apart an S-Class

As a quality control inspector and private mechanic, I have had the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the baddest machines on the planet. This is what I learned from the most luxurious AMG.

Plastic Clips are Strong (seriously)

As ridiculous as it might sound, pretty much every car is held together with plastic clips. They are often extremely cheap and will break if you so much as snap them in at the wrong angle. It’s a part no one sees so many manufacturers cheap out on them. That’s where Mercedes-Benz is different. Even the smallest, cheapest parts are so strong you can throw your weight into them. Need to snap a seat back in place? Feel free to throw your entire upper body into it. It won’t break.

Panel Gaps are Surgical

Pulling apart bodywork is only the start of where the impressive Mercedes Benz name comes through the design process. Trim pieces are incredibly tight which makes the first slide even more bizarre. Normally tight fitment in bodywork means things are difficult to get into place. Panels on these cars are like working on a giant lego set. It’s really something impressive when you think about how much they produce. That leads us to our next notable feature.

Error is Virtually 0%

I have never worked on a car where things were so similar from one vehicle to the next. It’s normal in the aftermarket to see variables in the same part for the exact same car. Maybe it’s out of round slightly or has a few thousandths of clearance difference. Even high-level, big-name companies experience this. Not Mercedes-Benz. They can pump out thousands of parts in exactly the same matter which is almost unfathomable when you think about how many cars they produce. Zero errors.

They Make You Money

As a mechanic, the name of the game is all about fast turn around and quality work. If you do one without the other, people get impatient rather quickly. By engineering a high level of quality into their products, M-B owners and mechanics generally spend less time replacing things that break or having to order parts. Engine components and internal tolerances are on the level of Swiss watchmaking, meaning that the only thing you have to worry about is your own ability to put things back together.

A Baby Could Do It

Mercedes-Benz vehicles are known to be some of the most complex machines on the planet. From recognizing a driver dozing off to lane assist, these 500+ horsepower monsters are some of the most technologically advanced vehicles on the planet. Having said that, they are incredibly easy to work on with factory tools and instruction manuals. The S-Class is basically a NASA level spaceship that the average person would be more than capable of working on if they could afford special factory tools. That takes genius levels of engineering to build into a car. You don’t learn that overnight, but with over 100 years of experience designing automobiles and that is what makes Mercedes Benz brilliant.
