Mercedes-Benz is a brand that is most commonly associated with high-end luxury, and for most people, it doesn’t disappoint. What you don’t expect to find with the Mercedes logo on the hood is a home on wheels, but that’s exactly what this 1961 Unimog has in store for you.

This particular Unimog started life as a German troop transport after it rolled off the production floor in 1961. It was designed to carry a large number of people across just about any terrain you could imagine. It eventually found its way to Denmark, where it spent some time as an ambulance, before being shipped to Maine and falling into the hands of Leandro Flaherty.

Since then, Flaherty’s Unimog has gotten a fantastic overhaul to turn it into a true home-away-from-home. And for the low price of $19,000, this piece of Mercedes history can be yours!

Under the Hood

There isn’t a whole lot of information available about the components under the hood, but historically, the Unimog 404 series was powered by a 138 cubic-inch 6-cylinder diesel engine, putting out around 82 horsepower. The 6-speed transmission also offered a 2-speed reverse, which is perfect for making it through a variety of different terrains.

In The Cabin

The driver’s seat and cabin doesn’t look much different than it did back in the ’60s and ’70s, complete with a first aid kit and instruction panels in German. Moving back into the living area, however, you’re greeted with the mobile luxury that Flaherty has been working on for all these years.

It’s equipped with sleeping accommodations for up to three people and 6’2” of standing room — along with a refrigerator, integrated water filters, and wooden cabinetry. For lighting, you’ve got both sunroofs to enjoy the brightness of your destination, and LED track lights for when the sun goes down.

You can even hang up a hammock on the reinforced rings to kick back and relax! This Unimog is truly a home away from home.

Outside Toys

For power, the Unimog is equipped with 280 watts of reinforced solar panels that are so rugged, you could even walk on them if necessary. Beneath the body, there are additional fuel tanks, fresh water tanks for drinking or washing, as well as grey and black water tanks for waste.

If you’re looking for a unique way to take your next road trip, this Unimog might be a good investment for you. Act fast though, because it’s a one-of-a-kind find that will probably disappear as quickly as it appeared!
