The new C63 will sound pretty good. Thankfully.

This video was obviously shot at the ‘Ring while Mercedes was testing its new C63 AMG both in sedan and wagon form. Gotta love the wagons. The new AMG’s details haven’t been announced, but the likely consensus is that it will use a variation of the “hot V” V8 that’s used in the all-new AMG GT. That means the wonderfully obnoxious sound that was the last 6.2L naturally aspirated engine will be replaced by a twin-turbocharged mill.

Personally, I think it sounds good, but it’s missing something. It’s missing the raucous noise that previously made AMG engines distinct. This new engine sounds an awful lot like BMW’s or Audi’s; it’s just missing the same character it once had. Hopefully some of the Mercedes tuners, like Brabus or Renntech will decide to go the way of the Challenger Hellcat and cut out the mufflers completely and just install a butterfly valve to make it sound a bit beefier.

Looking at that video, they sure do appear quick as all hell. I hope they also haven’t lost that lunacy that made the last C63 so drift-happy. Mercedes, you’re making me really nervous right now.
