P31 vs OE Tune: What’s in it for You?

We all know the “63” engine in the W204 is burdened with quite an awful tune from the factory, considering other versions of the same engine make quite higher numbers.

Well, the P31 AMG development pack on the C63 addresses that with some additional tuning and hardware (for the context of this story, we’ll focus strictly on engine changes). P31 adds the crank, rods, and pistons from the SLS motor, as well as a more aggressive tune to take advantage of the new goodies.

But, for the non-P31 cars, there’s also a wide array of ECU upgrades available. So the question now becomes: do the P31 equipped cars take to a tune better than the non-P31 cars? Will a bone stock “regular” C63 with the ECU tune have a better output?

Well, the video below gives a pretty clear cut example. You can’t get much more “real-world” results than a roll race, and although we don’t condone speeding, it does demonstrate what the difference would be when comparing AMG development pack versus stock+tune.
