Rolls-Royce Passive-Aggresively Takes Aim at Maybach
In the hierarchy of class land-yachts, none are more esteemed than those from Rolls-Royce, or at least that’s what Rolls-Royce wants you to believe.
Speaking with Car Advice, Rolls-Royce’s head of North American Communication, Gerry Spahn, gave a very enlightening view of what the British moniker thinks about the rest of the luxury car market.
When asked whether he believed Mercedes’ bringing back the Maybach nameplate would encroach on Rolls-Royce’s sales, Spahn flatly stated Maybach is not competition:
“Our competition is not necessarily vehicles, I can say airplanes, yachts, real estate, art, that’s where we are competing with. Our owners are putting down $20 million on a yacht. They may want to buy one or two Rolls-Royces to go along with it. Our average owner has seven cars.”
Spahn flatly denying that Maybach is a true competitor is, excuse my Old English, B.S. Guess what? The Rolls-Royce cars are based off BMWs, just like the Maybach is based off an S-Class. The two are very alike, and so they will compete in the same market.
The person who buys a Maybach and the person who buys a Rolls are likely to have much more in common with each other than the person who buys a CLA45 AMG and the person who buys a Maybach.
But what do you think of the rep’s statement? Are these fighting words, or is it just masking a bit of fear?
