Armor Up with the New Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard

The S-Class from Mercedes has been a favorite of diplomats around the world. The versions that are used to transport diplomats and high-ranking executives usually aren’t the same ones you find on the showroom floor, though. These bad boys have security upgrades.

New VIP Protection Version of the S600 Announced

MBZ has announced a special subclass of the S600, the S600 Guard. This version is designed for diplomats and VIPs who require more protection than a regular thin-skinned vehicle can provide. The S600 Guard is modified with a number of improvements designed to provide for the maximum security of the occupants.

Underneath it All, it’s Still a Standard S600

The S600 Guard is powered by the same six-liter V12 in the mainstream S600. This engine produces 523 horsepower and 612 foot-pounds of torque. These numbers provide enough motive energy to get the extra weight from all the security modifications moving at acceptable speeds.

Major Structural Modifications for Security

Most of the security modifications on the S600 Guard are difficult to differentiate from the standard models. There’s been extensive reinforcement to the vehicle structure. There have also been special modifications to the body shell, as well as the installation of ballistic glass. The glass and body modifications provide ballistic protection from standard firearm rounds, as well as protection from explosive devices.

According to press reports from Stuttgart, the modifications on the S600 Guard meet or beat VR9-level ballistic protection requirements, and all requirements for ERV2010 explosive protection. The vehicle is also equipped with a self-contained emergency ventilation system to protect against smoke, fumes, or chemicals.
