Power window switch replacement

I need to replace the left front power window switch in my 93 190E. Can anyone offer a little assistance with this procedure?

First, you need to carefully lift the center console wood off. This is done by using a plastic wedge, like a small plastic puttty knife at the rear/skinny side of the wood, The console wood has small plastic hooks at the top and bottom parts.

Second, as you lift the console wood, you have to unplug each switch socket to free the console wood. Don't worry about which goes where, the plugs are all coded for correct replacement.

Once the wood is free of the console and shfter, flip it over and use a small screwdriver to press in the metal tabs that holds the switch onto the wood.

While you've got the console open, may as well replace the small light bulb that provides illumination for the shifter and used some compressed air to blow out all the dust and debris that fall into the shift mechanism.

MTI,
Thanks for the quick reply and helpful information. I will attempt this replacement just as soon as the switch arrives.

Arrow While on the subject

While on the subject... My passenger rear window is not operating. This could be just about any number of problems, as it will not operate either from the door switch or the main console switch.

I was told that "one of the cables tends to brake inside the rubber bellow between the door and the frame (door hinge)". To me this sounded like a pile of BS, but as a complete newbie I figure anything is possible.

Any simple way to test this theory or better diagnose the issue with zero or minor disassembly?

I am going through the same thing myself, do you hear the motor at all when you press the window switch down? Mine happens to be the window motor itself that has to be replaced. Is it possible for you to take the door panel off and see if what has happened is true? Just my 2 cents as newb

Well, as it is winter already, I am not in a big hurry to fix it, plus at home we are only two people anyway :P

However, if I do remove the door panel which seem to be a simple process, how can I test the motor for malfunction/burned?

I supposed I could see if electricity is getting to it when I activate the switch, but the truth is that A) I don't really know where the motor is, and B) I don't know what the terminal configuration might be like.

Any hints? Anyone else?

Lito, well this is 8 years later, so more for anyone else stumbling on this thread to fix 190E window issues -- the wires between the back door and the frame do break, especially after 20 years of opening and closing. I bought the car used, and my back windows never worked anyway. But one day my right front window failed and the fuse was blown. New fuses blew so there was a short somewhere, and I eventually traced it to wire strands that came through the insulation at the rear left doorframe hinge and contacted metal there. Front right and rear left are on same fuse, as are front left and rear right. I respliced the broken wire and taped it up, and while I was exploring the rear door panels I replaced the non-functioning rear window regulators and live happily ever after. Right now I'm troubleshooting window rocker switch illumination on a different 190E.
