New Electric G Class Look

Mercedes just posted this video with its CEO Ola Källenius offering an extended look at the new electric G Class. (Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere!)

Personally, I don't know why anybody would buy an electric G

You won't have to worry about hydrolocking the motor for one thing. I'd hate to poke a hole in the battery pack and burn the whole forest down though. If it's on the bottom that seems like a distinct possibility. Glad they're testing them in Germany and not the USA!

I really have mixed feelings about the EQG. I know electric is the future but I didn’t buy a G because it’s good for the environment. I bought one because it’s a bad *** truck with an incredible rumble from the V8. If and when I go electric it won’t be with the G and I will be holding on to my V8 for as long as possible!

That said, I do think MB did a great job electrifying the G for those that want that type of vehicle.

Well that certainly wasn't a great off-road demonstration, especially with the blonde bimbo making school girl noises going over every bump. Would have been better if she had remained silent. What worries me actually is they're probably focused on people like the poster, above, and not people like me who actually want to crawl over some rocks with a $200K MB. It'll probably make fake V8 noises and retain all the creaks and rattles of the original. The lack of a spare is a big red flag right off the bat for me. Like I'm going to venture out into the wilderness with a tire inflator kit, yeah, right! Heck, I'm pretty sure one of the reasons I bought my recent 2024 F-Pace SVR (other than the supercharged V8 noise) is that is came with a REAL spare tire. It's like angles started singing, the clouds parted and a ray of sunshine shinned right on the spare when I lifted the rear floor panel. It was amazing to behold.

I love my G and I love electric cars. However don’t have interest in the EQG.

For the foreseeable future EVs should be leased due to horrible residuals, changing technology, and the $7500 EV credit. I imagine the EQG will lease poorly.

I question the sanity of the CEOs who sign-off on huge hybrid/EV development budgets for $100K+ automobiles such as GM's Corvette E-Ray and Cadillac Lyric, BMW's XM, and MB's EQG and EQS. Will any of these lux rides ever sell enough copies to recover their investments, or are they mostly objects to promote technology and brand?

I share the sentiment of the group. I am not interested in an electric off road truck. I have a fully built off road jeep and a G so I can go off-road, with safety in mind. Lack of a spare tire, additional weight, clearances, are all big concerns. I am sure that in places like CA, an electric G will be sold in droves because they are nearly all mall-crawlers, used by bored house wives to shuttle kids to private school - but for the small minority of G users that actually use the trucks to go off roading, the electric G will be an automatic no go. Let alone the concern for long-distance travel and charging, which are BIG concerns as well.

I think most EVs are money losers other than Teslas which took years to get to profitability.

Coupled with the need to discount and do incentives to respond to every Tesla price cut and manufacturers are losing a lot of money per vehicle but trying to fight for market share.

The vast majority of ICE G wagens never go off road. Nor are they used for long distance travel. I think the electric G will do well.

I think it will do well initially, but then once the novelty wears off it will struggle compared to the ICE models. Granted I’m sure MB will control supply to keep it exclusive.

I wouldn't but most of the G63s in my neighborhood are driven by soccer moms. They probably wouldn't care.

That's the key really controlling the supply. Compare how an EV like a Rivian does whose supply is tighter (probably not by design but just how it is) versus the iX or EQE/EQS which are being pumped out faster than they need to be.

If this electric G helps decrease fleet emissions and keeps the ICE G going, I am all for it.

at 8 minute of the video you can see the G-turn. That is nifty lol. But I am also in the camp for non-electric G.

I mean, didn't another company had it first (called tank turn)? Was it Rivan?

Rivian and Hummer had it but Rivian pulled it from production. Not sure about Hummer.

Nooo

I just wonder why would someone even buy this over ..let’s just say a rivian. No classic v8 rumble yet I get to own most non aerodynamic shape …and I can bet this would be with a range of no more than 250 miles .

Iconic shape. Better dealer network. More luxurious. Probably more exclusive.
