Exclamation MB Recalling 2011 model diesels (GL included)

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls...h&summary=true

From Autoblog:
Nearly 7,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles are being recalled for potentially leaky fuel filters. Included under the recall are diesel (read: Bluetec) versions of the 2011 E-Class, GL-Class, M-Class, and R-Class, as well as the 2012 S-Class.

The 2011 model year vehicles being recalled were built between January 2010 and April 2011. NHTSA says fuel filters on affected vehicles "may develop leaks from the area around the heating component."

Mercedes-Benz USA will be contacting owners for free inspection and replacement, beginning in November

2011 GL 350
Just had my 2011 GL 350 diesel fuel filter replaced under recall at 6000 miles. Had no problems prior to recall, but got letter from MB to have it done. Does this set back the recommended filter replacement at 20,000 miles to 26,000 miles?

Not sure if I am saving money on gas by going diesel. Refilled recently at $4.19 when premium was $3.19.

If the filter element itself was replaced then yes, a new 20k mi starts at that time.
Your second question: If you get 28 mpg then your fuel cost is 15 cents/mi if you had a GL450 and got 12 mpg then the fuel cost would be 26 cents/mi (21 cents/mi @ 15mpg) assuming the prices you stated. You are still WAY ahead considering your greatly increased resale market value - or higher residual if you are leasing. And you are 'greener' because you use fewer gallons of fuel per thousand miles.

How about a more realistic figure of 18mpg for a GL450 and 21mpg for the diesel? EPA figures for the 2011 GL450 are 13 city, 18 highway; Bluetec, 17 city, 21 highway.

Here is my realistic numbers. NYC driving - my car has 7500 miles on it and it's 80% city 20% highway mileage. Average is 18.1 mpg. If I go on a highway and reset daily usage - highway mileage easily tops 25mpg on ANY speed. If I drive no more than 70 mph - it will be about 29mpg. I used to drive 4.8 X5. Average was 12.9 mpg. Highway - never more than 18mpg. I don't think GL450 will get better than that.

I average around 16.4 city and HWY in my GL450 but I'm running 22" wheels. I was averaging 17.7 MPG when I had the 19" wheels and that's over a 50,000+ mile average. You can get 20 MPG on a rural HWY but going 70 MPH the MPG is closer to 18.

The only time I've seen the mileage dip below 14 MPG was entirely city driving. If you dive the GL450 without gunning the engine, the MPG is acceptable for such a big vehicle. Sure, the gas doesn't get as good of the mileage as the diesel but the 450/550 is much more fun to drive.
