How hot do the C55 exhaust tips get?

One of my passenger side tips is making contact with my bumper and causing a mild whirring noise at 1000 rpms. It did it when I first got the car and I went under there and messed with the exhaust hangers and it went away, until now.

Instead of messing with the hangers again, I am wondering if I can use some vibration absorbing heat resistant tape (like vibration damping Dynamat for instance) between the tip and my bumper. But wondering how hot the tips get, I don't want them to set fire to the damper material.

Anyone know?

i work for a company that manufactures and sells their own sound deadening mat if you want any, it's a little bit higher grade than dynamat because it has a thicker adhesive. here's the thing though with any brand you choose to go with for this stuff. the adhesve is made with gasoline. it won't melt away, but it will heat up and my theory is that it will start to let off a foul odor (i've personally never heated a piece up before, thinking about trying it now) it will not fall off though, if anything it'll make the adhesive stickier.

Michael, thanks for the tip about the adhesive. As long as it doesn't melt or burn anything, I might try it. With the new CF diffuser installed, it's a tight fit there and I don't want to run into vibration problems and constantly fiddle with the exhaust hangers.

Can anyone else confirm that the temps aren't too hot at the tips? I may try sticking some dynamat or take Michael up on his offer for the superior dampener if it's ok to do so.

Why not just bend the exhaust tip down to match the other side?

Fix it right, don't put a bandaid on it. Take it to an exhaust shop and have them make the necessary tweaks. I bet it 's less than a 100 bucks. I'm all for saving money, but what you're suggesting is about as hack as it gets.

Never thought of that. How does one go about bending an exhaust tip? I don't want to take it to a shop and spend hours chasing ghosts.

Agree with you man, I am not a bandaid guy. The dampener fix is more diagnosis than anything else. If it works, I know for sure its the exhaust tips that are causing the vibration and not some underbody panels or one of million other things. Would rather not spend a half day and a couple hundred at a muffler shop without knowing that's the problem.

And to answer your original question on how hot it gets, I drove my car 600 miles to LA about a year ago and this girl that I know came out to say hi to me when I got there and started looking at my car and she had shorts on.her leg touched my exhaust and it left a black circle (it'd be nice if AMG was engraved) and I got a picture of it. A year later now and she still has a red mark there.

Oh crap! That sounds painful lol OP, just go to a muffler shop and get it done. A good muffler shop can do that in like 30 mins. I just installed my diffuser and my tips were touching. They did a little cutting and welding and it was fixed!

I can post a pic if you'd like to take for reference?

Guys,

I think I solved it. I loosened the hangers on both sides and added a simple spacer and a few washers so that the tips are now a bit lower than they were before. I went for a quick ride and no vibes, although I need to put more miles on it before confirming 100% that it solved it. So far its encouraging...

I was going to ask...for those with the aftermarket ebay diffusers, how the hell do you clean your tips? There's not much space to clean stock...looks like you can barely get a rag in there...
