I went simple huge screwdriver like many to lock the flywheel but STILL used that MBtool for maximum torque I could get on it. (new pulley was ec/ASP with factory inner core)
An MB master tech would probably never do that and will go factory spec with the MB tool that takes bolts out of the starter to get the locking tool in.
That being said, this latest pulley install makes it a half dozen on my car and each time, my tech just locked the flywheel with big ole screwdriver and all was fine.
Just can't describe enough the torque it takes to get that baby torqued down. I had huge breaker bars on it and was giving it all I had.
Your tech is just being conservative....no need to ditch him. Just MAKE SURE he uses a new pulley bolt. He'll know this but just so you can sleep at night, double check and ask him. If he says old one is fine....THEN run!!
