Question on Installing Eurocharged 172MM pulley

So my installer just called me and told me he may have to remove the starter to install the crank pulley because the factory pulley has holes for the counter holder (special tool seen below) and the Eurocharged pulley does not. He says the mercedes tool that holds the ring that they can use and need to remove the starter possibly for access. I trust the guy as he is a certified master MB tech who owns his own shop now.

Anyone heard of this?

see attached picture of special tool and eurocharged pulley

I've never seen a starter removed to change a crank pulley. There are other ways to hold the crank. Honestly if he's never done one of these I'd run because the LAST thing you want is a bad install, trust me been through one and it isn't pretty or fun at all!

Find a new mechanic. This is the start of another "my pulley flew off" thread.

And that pulley holder tool won't give you enough leverage to torque the crank shaft pulley to recommended specs.

Dec find another mechanic. Don't want this to go wrong. My former mb tech used a pulley chain tool w a worn piece of belt to remove he pulley and another worn piece of belt and tool to install the new pulley. Took his time to make sure it seated correctly.
Search exotic metal post for pulley print out and take w you to next shop

It would also be nice for new members to tell us where they are by publishing their location. This would help in finding or guiding them to better resources that have done this before.

DON'T EVER LET ANYONE TOUCH THE PULLEY UNLESS THE'VE DONE THIS MANY TIMES BEFORE!

He is probably attempting to lock the flywheel so the crank does not move so he can torque the bolt to spec so the pulley doesnt fly off...........

I agree. I think he is just making sure the bolt is to spec. The tool he is using is made by MB specifically for that purpose

your mechanic is correct. that tool is for the oem pulley and the e/c pulley doesnt have the proper holes to seat the tool. so he has to use the flywheel lock tool and remove the starter. its not the best way imo but for these style pulleys its necessary. if you look at the pte dampners he had for sale on the f/s page his will utilize the oem tool

I don't think it's a bad idea to remove the starter, but it's unnecessary. I installed mine by locking the flywheel from the access hole in the bottom of the converter housing. It's kinda complicated to do which is why he may just want to access it from the starter.

Yup, and I still insist in locking the flywheel instead of using the MB tool ( which can't be used anyways with the EC pulley ).

+1 with GT on this one. With these older (new ones are ASPs) EC pulleys it's quite a beotch to get um off and on. The Benz pulley tool doesn't work so you'll have to rely on flywheel lock only.

I went simple huge screwdriver like many to lock the flywheel but STILL used that MBtool for maximum torque I could get on it. (new pulley was ec/ASP with factory inner core)

An MB master tech would probably never do that and will go factory spec with the MB tool that takes bolts out of the starter to get the locking tool in.

That being said, this latest pulley install makes it a half dozen on my car and each time, my tech just locked the flywheel with big ole screwdriver and all was fine.

Just can't describe enough the torque it takes to get that baby torqued down. I had huge breaker bars on it and was giving it all I had.

Your tech is just being conservative....no need to ditch him. Just MAKE SURE he uses a new pulley bolt. He'll know this but just so you can sleep at night, double check and ask him. If he says old one is fine....THEN run!!
