Steep driveways

I live in Texas where many people drive trucks. There are many steep driveways.

I have been avoiding steep driveways and when I cannot avoid them, I'm going up and down at an angle. So far I don't think I've scraped anything.

Who else has to deal with many steep driveways in their area, and how has the car managed so far?

What part of Texas are you located in? I live near Austin and have no problems scrapping entering or exiting driveways. I had a Ferrari and it was really bad concerning bottoming out on driveways.

I haven't had an issue most places because this car has better clearance than my GT3 or Z06 did. At stock ride height, this thing has better clearance than any car I've owned in the last decade plus. I'd love to lower it and put different wheels on it but it's so nice not scraping everywhere.

I did manage to curb the **** out of my carbon fiber front splitter thingy going to a new restaurant a couple of weeks ago. I didn't want to be "that guy" and refuse to go eat somewhere because of my car but in hindsight, I wish I would have.

My driveway is steep enough to give an F80 M3 difficulties, so my fingers are crossed for the GT. Does anyone have any comparative experience?

Also, a question - just because you can go up, does that necessarily mean you can come back down?

Reason I have some doubt is that an angled approach, while deadening the gradient, does cross up the ride height, as the car levels. Not so bad for the rear, but front is way lower.

Thoughts?

I'd love to do the same to my amg GT s, but it's so nice to drive it stock, so much clearance and drives nice. My 997 4s was lowered on modulare m3 20's, had a gt2 front bumper, etc. Looked sick but a scraper lol

I agree with Gordon here. Torn between lowering and the dreaded scrape. It's nice not to think about. I had a 2014 427 vette convertible with a carbon fiber lip. Actually cracked it on a regular road on a slight dip that should never have happened. 1400$ BS.

If you look underneath front clip, there is a relative wide 1.5-2" strip of plastic that I've brushed lightly a couple of times on quick drops off inclined driveways, but that's it.

I took the plunge and lowered the car to max drop on the KW HAS kit. Luckily the roads aren't too bad here in Orange County but once outside of Irvine, it gets pretty rough. I typically take the time to scout different entrances/exits if I think one is too risky.

So far, my front lip is clean as a whistle.

Im lowered too maxed out on the KW's and to this date, no issues with scraping. But I do angle in and out by habit in a lot of situations. Whats nice to know is the part that could get damaged is easily replaced and not expensive:

Sonystyle02 that's a nice stance! Great wrap too! So what's max drop on the KW HAS? 1.5"?

Not too different from stock but then again I was only stock for about 2wks before the KWs went in. S+ dampening (or lack thereof) is a bit jarring so I typically ride on S.

Same here, I got mine in May of 2015 and had the 2nd kit stateside installed shortly after so I don't remember what stock felt like

I too run Sport now vs S+.

Do most people, not lowered, feel that their cars nose can clear a standard parking block?

This is is the first car i have had in a while without a 360 overhead camera. Those parking sensor lights in the instrument cluster aren't very reliable in any Mercedes I've driven. So far, when I've ****ed up I seem to just barely clear the parking block, but probably scraping it a little.

I just avoid going near the blocks at all. And it's tha damn bolts in the blocks that are the real problem. They work loose and sometimes rise up 1-2". I was at a Whole Foods in a downpour last year in my CL. When I left, a bolt had gotten behind front clip and ripped it off several inches

On GT it is just a 2" plastic strip but I'm still careful.

I can't clear much of anything and have to be careful. I never get close to a parking block if I can help it - even if I have to the leave the *** end out a bit. I try to back into parking spots if possible.

In fact my front air dam is now loose in the middle and slightly hanging down. The air dam is held in place by a series of rivets designed to break loose in case the dam gets jammed up badly. If it breaks loose then the front end pieces don't come loose and get damaged. My SA told me in that sense it is sacrificial in its installation. I would love to be able to get mine up in the air and put a couple of small sheet metal screws in it to get it back up. The SA said that the way it is designed they can't just put a new rivet up there.

It's unfortunate, but this is what we get from a 150k MB product

Before you fire back at me, it's the direction that ALL manufactures are going.

The rear is low too.. if you back into a spot, you can only reverse so much before the parking block comes into contact with the underneath of your AMG GT. Look underneath, its a strange design, but the rear is lower than the front

I feel your guys pain. The GTR has the front splitter and the rear CF exhaust cover. Not high enough to clear many parking structures. The front has this rounded rubber airdam cover underneath. I’ve rubbed this once but was able to polish out the scuff. My driveway is inclined up pretty steep and it sucks. Each time I roll down I have to lay down large sheets and planks of wood to minimize the pitch. It’s such an ordeal driving it. After I sloooooooowly pull in I have to put away half a tree of wooden pieces neatly away...and don’t even talk about parallel parking. That’s like entering a mine field...
