2008 S series mute
Does the subject model have a "mute" button that mutes the telephone only. I can make calls, receive calls and hear the caller but the caller can't hear me. Any suggestions?

I'm surprised. Either there are 45 other people with the same problem waiting for a solution (Number of readers to date) or 45 shy people who are afraid to give up the answer. Don't be shy folks. Jump up and lend a hand.

Had it in to the dealer and Star says microphone. Time to start tracing wires or replace circuit board in the mirror.

I bought this GL a little over a month ago, but just started trying to get the hands-free calling to work. I can do the same thing as you mentioned - make/receive calls and I can hear the caller, but the caller can not hear me. The "Mic On"/"Mic Off" soft key makes no difference. I'll be curious to see what the final outcome was for you. In the meantime, I'll try and start looking into things, too.

My car was used and didn't come with the Command manual. I've just downloaded the manual from the mercedes site and will start the long read. I suspect the issue is software related and not hardware. So far I can't get any of the hands free options to work such as call for radio stations or telephone functions etc. Lets keep the topic alive until we find the solution.

Keep it alive... agree.
I saw the "mic on /mic off" soft button, but that doesn't seem to be the problem... or at least it's not causing any effect one way or the other. However, it's slightly confusing since it appears that for the microphone to be "active", the soft key needs to read "mic off".
I was told that even though I have the buttons for the hands free on my steering wheel, I don't actually have that option. Whether there is more hardware needed, or a software reprogram, I'm not sure. But apparently my car wasn't ordered with that function. Which makes me wonder if I actually have a microphone?

Well, I think the mystery is solved as to why callers can't hear me. There is no "emergency/911" box under the seat. It was supposed to be there, according the build sheet, but it looks like it was taken and possibly used for another car on some dealer's lot. Anyways, the place I bought this car from is ordering me a new one and will replace it. The mechanic did verify (I was there with him) that the microphone is physically there.
For the GL, it's super easy to access the area where these control boxes (there's actually a number of them needed to make phone calls). I'm not sure on yours, the S class.
I'll be getting that new control box in a week or so - we'll see if that completely solves the problem.

Thanks for the feedback, Dennis. I'll be going to Florida in a couple of months and I'll get my Indie to look at it there. I'll let everyone know what we find.
