SoundGate Announces Mercedes Fiber-Optic Interfaces
Good News...
SoundGate will begin shipment June 24th, 2004 of what it says is the industry’s first fiber optic interfaces. Two models will be shipping – the first, part #KNMB1 allows integration of a Kenwood CD Changer to the Mercedes D2B fiber optic bus. The second interface, part #AUXMB1 allows ANY auxiliary audio source to be input directly into the fiber optic system of the Mercedes - no more FM modulators.
Both of these interfaces include all fiber optic cabling and power cables, and have been validated for use with 1999 thru 2004 Mercedes D2B fiber optic radios, Navigation units included. It is important to note that these interfaces do not work with the MOST fiber optic systems present in the 2003 and newer E-Class and 2004 and newer S-Class.
The Soundgate AUXMB1 is the industry’s first fiber optic Auxiliary input converter that will allow ANY auxiliary audio source such as an iPod, MP3 player, DVD or Satellite radio, to be input directly into the fiber optic system of the Mercedes - no more FM modulators! Includes all fiber optic cabling and power cables necessary for a complete and clean installation.
The AUXMB1 is compatible with 1999 thru 2004 Mercedes "D2B" fiber optic radios, including those with navigation. Can NOT be used when a factory CD changer is installed, as this device connects to the same CD changer connections in the vehicle.
Important Application Note: The AUXMB1 is NOT compatible with the "MOST" fiber optic systems present in the 2003 and newer E-Class and 2004 and newer S-Class Mercedes Benz.
Availability: Usually ships the same business day.
Soundgate AUXMB1 1999-2004 Mercedes Benz Auxiliary Input Converter (Now In-Stock)
AUXMB1 Retail Price: $399.95 LOGJAM Price: $259.95

The description of this doesn't say anything about being able to control the auxiliary device via the steering wheel controls, though.
If all it does is allow audio input, then it doesn't seem to provide any additional benefits over what a simple $6 cable to the aux input in the glovebox would. Am I missing something?

Unless you don't have an AUX input, but then there are cheaper adapters for that...

Auxiliary Input Converters (E320) 2001 iPod?
Hello, I have been trying to connect my iPod to my Bose system (CD changer missing) and found FM modulators disappointing. The Griffin iTrip looks (but does not sound) good... I have an E320 2001. I know for a fact that there is no mistery connection in my glove box compartment and suspect this is an elaborate hoax. Some of you will have experimented with the (expensive) Auxiliary Input Converters made by BLITZSAFE and SOUNDGATE. Would you care to share your experience? Any recommendation for my particular case? Any affordable solution? Thanks in advance, Chris in Miami.

So what's the deal? If I simply want an aux input on my '01 Merc E-430, what are my cheapest options if I go to get it done at a shop? Can I buy a COMMAND radio and swap it out replacing my MOST radio?
