Speedometer and Fuel gauge inop

I recently bought a 1994 C180 Elegance and the speedometer and fuel gauge stopped working. I have read several forums and one points to a cable for the speedometer and the other mentioned sensors at the wheels. It dosent leak and other than that I am amazed at how well it runs. It only has 158k original miles if someone could tell me how to approach this to fix it I would be greatly appreciative. There also seems to be a slight 5-6 shudder in first and reverse should I be concerned?

Sounds like you visited the benz dating site---all sorts of misinformation,in any event

Fuel level=controlled by the R and or L fuel level sensor in fuel tank(under the car)

Speedo=receives calculated speed signal from the traction control module via the speed sensors!!

You need someone with good test equipment and an excellent knowledge of the cars(pre 95) systems else you will be on the may pole trip!!

UPDATE

Ok so after removing the instrument cluster the fuel gauge seems to be fixed due to loose connection in the harness, however this information doesn't come without a cost. I turned the ignition on while i the cluster disconnected and now have a srs light on (which I am reading that a reader can reset the light as it wasn't there before) and the worn brakes light. These both weren't on before so assuming (I hope that they are just due to interruption of the circuit). The trip and odometer seems to be working as well now just not the speedometer. I will try to have someone look at the speed sensors at the tire?
