IDEAS ON: Steering wheel gear shift update (paddle shift)
If you have a W203 with the later 3 pin CANBUS cable from the airbag buttons to the steering controller (N80) then it appears that below might be the method for activation of the steering wheel gear shifting (paddle shift manual) for cars W203 [2002-2004].
I am working on W203 [2000-2002] as this is the car that I have.
Obviously for W203 [2005- ] the mod is very easy.
Parts
------
- new steering spital (main clock spring behind steering wheel)
possible sources = W171 SLK, W209 CLK 55 AMG, W203 C55 AMG, W211 E55 AMG
- new steering wheel and air-bag (if airbag is not compatible).
- mode selector switch panel [winter + summer + manual ] (probably use the W209 CLK AMG version for best fit).
- new gear shift (any valid part from W203 and W209 is useful)
Installation
-----------
There needs to be a 2 pin connection from the steering wheel to the clock spring. Brown (earth) and White/Red -> connects to pin 4 plug 1 of the gear selector N15/5
From the mode selector there needs to be a 2 pin connection (probably existing). Grey/Blue which goes to front sam N10/1 (pin 3 on plug 10) and White/Green which goes to pin 3 plug 1 on the gear shift selector N15/5.
Caveat
--------
There may be a revision or updated software needed to activate this function and thus far I am not certain if a new ignition switch isnt also needed.
Changing the clock spring will most likely in older cars require new switches for all the other attachments on the column. The upside however is that a heated steering wheel [option 443] becomes a possible option in the changeover.
Possible part numbers using w209 CLK55 AMG setup [804]
---------------------
Mode selector - S16/5 - A203 542 01 26
Steering Spital - N80 - A209 464 00 18
Gear shift - N15/5 - A209 267 02 24 (many options including 7 speed and keyless go versions)
Assorted wiring
Steering wheel as mentioned
Switches for lights, wipers, adjust column and cruise control to match new setup.
Steering column cover shell if needed.
