2005 Grill installed
Here is my original grill
This picture shows the original grill again which was painted to match my car.
this is a comparison picture. it is an optical illusion. the grills are the same width. my drive way is angled and it looks like the original grill is narrower compared to the 05 grill. i posted another comparison pic further down. notice the side pegs are longer on the original grill than the 2005.
heres another pic for comparison
notice the notches which lock into place on the bumper
here you can see where those notches on the original grill lock into. there is a hole in the center of the original grill where that center pyramid fits into.
here you can see the 3 slots on the 05 grill. the center one must go and the other two narrowed.

these end slots must be either removed or narrowed. my brother used a dremmel to narrow the end (backside which connects to the grill) of the slot to make a stem which emmulates the one found on the original grill. the the bottom of the slot is left large so it locks into the hole, like the wider bottom attached to the stem on the original grill.

this is what the stem looked like after the dremmel. bad photoshop but i hope you get the idea.
this slot is removed completely.

My CLK grill was much wider than the stock grill, spent hours grinding the sides off.
My 2005 grill fm the dealer is DEAP Backordered, code from the dealer that I may not get it for at least a month, so Steve the Euro Pimp is still the best source for these.
first i removed the center slot off the new grill with a dremmel. then i held the two grills up to each other to see where the stems on the original were in comparison to the slots on the 2005. i marked with a sharpie these measurements making a sort of template on the end slots and then began to dremmel. these end slots must be either removed or narrowed. using a dremmel to narrow the end (backside which connects to the grill) of the slot to make a stem which emmulates the one found on the original grill. the the bottom of the slot is left large so it locks into the hole, like the wider bottom attached to the stem on the original grill (see the 3rd pic down in teh second post for an example of the stem i made). i left it a little wide in order to make corrections later rather than make it too thin and over too far where it would have to be removed completely if it didnt fit in the space.
after about 15 min of dremmel time the stems were ready and i went to the front of the car to place it in the hole and see what had to be adjusted. the passenger side was a little wide and adjustments had to be made. i dremmeled to make it thinner and it fit perfectly. the problem i had now were the pegs on the side of the grill weren't thick enough or long enough. with the plastic clasps in place the grill was loose. i went to pep boys to buy double back tape, the type for body moldings made by 3M, cost $5.38. i rolled it up around the pegs to make them thicker and longer. they fit better but required a bit more stuffing. so i rolled some up and shoved in the hole after the grill was in place. then i placed the plastic clasp over the pegs to lock them in place. then i screwed back down the black brace which attaches the top of the grill to the radiator area.
Done! Total time, about 45 mins labor, excluding my drive to pep boys. I took my time because i wanted to make sure i had the slots dremmeled just right. if you have any questions let me know.
