Question G-Tech Pro

Has anyone out there had experience with the G-Tech devices which repute to calculate damn near everything about your car from the cigarette lighter socket? It seems like it would be fun to have if it works!

I was thinking about buying the RR version of the G-tech pro, which has the capability to download to PC via serial cable and a couple other features. Supposedly, it can determine RPM tach and engine shift points through digital signal processing when connected to the cigarette lighter power adapter. I heard it works better when you're driving on a flat road, no incline or declines.

I had the first generation of the G tech, it worked but wasn't the most user friendly. Then I got a Passport Gtimer similar to the improved version of the Gtech. I had a chance to compare accuracy at the drag strip, and the et was dead on with the strip clocks. MPH were higher on the Gtimer because it measures at the end of the 1/4 mi. rather than the average of the last 60 feet as they do at the strip. If your going to do performace mods, its a good tool.

It pick up electric pulse thru the cigaret lighter and guess the rpm. It doesn't work on all car tho, specially those cars with complex electrical system. When I tried it with my C32, the rpm was erratic. However, we use it for 0-100-0 and max G and it was good.

Thanks

Thanks guys, I think I'll put one one my Christmas wishlist. Ray, I see you have the full SL55 airbox on your car; does it fit well without a lot of mods?

I have a G-Tech Pro, I used to use it all the time, but for some reason I'm having troubles getting the thing to stick to the windshield...might be the cold weather. Anyway, it seems very accurate, as my best (perfect launch, perfect conditions) 0-60 was a 5.2s and 1/4 mile was a 13.7 @ 103. I think it was Car & Driver who got identical times in my same car. So, I guess its pretty accurate.

The RPM's don't seem to work at all. It works in other cars perfectly, but on my car the RPM's are always changing and I just usually ignore it. Other than that, its a fun gadget and its cool to see the G-forces go crazy.

on the Gtech my 0-60 was 3.5 and 1/4 was a 11.5@120. My best et. at the track was 11.997 @ 117. Gtech is too "nice"

I have the Beltronics FX2 (which I think is very similar to the Passport G-timer).

With ESP on, without any power braking, and "feathering the throttle" at the beginning to prevent ESP from cutting power, I managed to get 0-60 in 5.0 seconds (twice). I'm pretty happy about that, as the C55 is a 4.7-5.0 second car according to the car magazines. If I just stomp on the throttle, the ESP just kills the power because of wheelspin.

I'm waiting to the spring to see if I can improve on that. There are a number of ways to improve the launch (turning off ESP, and maybe even power braking). From what people say, it seems you still have to "feather the throttle" to a certain degree until the tires have traction before pushing the throttle all the way down.

If anything, this device really can be useful to judge how well you launch. With the C55, it's all in the launch....if you get that right, it's just flooring the pedal to the metal and you're off.

What was the Pre-roll value on your Gtech? The factory default value was 10 inch, my time was 0.6 second slower when I changed the pre-roll to 0 inch.

okay...

Got my Gtech pro SS today...it is much smaller than it appears on the photos on the website!

but anywys...the RPM readings and the upshifting LEDs work good on my C55...I havent tried doing real runs yet for 1/4 mile coz I dont know where to do it! I might go out and do it on the highway later! =)

dont know what to set the pitch control to....( its the one you tell the Gtech how stiff your suspensions are)

last of all
For some reason when I tried to use the Gtech on an 2005 E55 AMG....it couldnt read the RPMs

just leave the pitch to preset value, set the preroll to 0.
did you perform the rpm calibration procedure?

if you leave it at default setting 12 inch, it will shave a few 1/10 of a second off your real time, to compensate for driver delay reaction. That's why a lot of people think the Gtech is too optimistic.
1. config mode
2. run parameters
3. staging/rollout

update,

I'm unable to set preroll on the Gtech SS unit I think, because I couldnt find it!

I tried quarter mile run today. It's pretty good, it read 13.5...which is about the same as my dragstrip times.

the 0-60 time i got was 4.98

its really cold out and was slipping a little...

the big thing that bothers me is the HP calculation.
I followed the instruction of the manual
1. Stage, accelerate 1st gear not as fast and upshift at around half the RPM to ur redline (in my case i upshifted after 3000 RPM)
2. Second gear, I floored it to the bottome until it upshifted to third gear.
3. on third gear I hold the full pedal for about a sec then released the pedal so the timer automatically stops..

then my HP turns out to be around 240 according to the unit...

sorry it's actually "rollout", not "pre-roll". I have it on my RR.

Your hp is lower than a dyno run because of the wind drag and road fiction.

your 0-60 time is so good, I got 5.7s when I did it on a quiet street with poor surface.
