There are 2 5w40 oils used by Mercedes. 5w40 Formula M which is 229.5 and 5w40 ESP which is 229.51. 5w40 Formula M is approved for the AMG M113.

Just cause its not listed on that website doesn't mean its not produced. I use it everyday at work. Here is the data sheet from Mobil.

Mobil 1 5W-40

My dealer put the new ESP 5W-40 in my E63 last Summer, when it was HOT outside. I noticed from day 2 after that service there was a little audible lifter noise at initial startup, lasted about 30 - 60 seconds and then all was fine. Engine ran super once warmed up, and the oil lasted a long time without getting discolored much. The 5W-40 is a quality oil.

However, I did my customary 6 month oil change at home last month, used Mobil 1 0W-40, and cold start lifter noise is completely gone. Engine revs freer when cold, but once warm no perceptible difference in performance.

I say my 156 engine is happier with the 0W-40, while the cold start lifter tap was likely harmless, it was not there before the 5W-40, and is not there after it either.

I'm sticking with 0W-40 going forward. Have also always used the 0W-40 in my C55 and V12, never had any lubrication issues with either.

Using 0-40 Mobil, many people have reported similar positive experiences with other engines. Nice job.

Does your shop get it in bulk containers?

I'm assuming the place he works may get it in 55gal drums because I can't find a 5W-40 Mobil 1 Formula M w/o the ESP acronym associated with it.

I work at a dealer. We get it in our bulk tank. We also sell qts of 5w40 Formula M and ESP. ESP is only recommended for use in diesel vehicles with a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Do you work at an authorized Mercedes dealer?

Do you know how a normal consumer can obtain the Mobil 1 5W40 Formula M (without ESP)?

2005 C55, 2006 Ram 2500 MegaCab diesel, sold 2001 Dodge 2500 Cummins, sold 87 190e-16v, sold 97 e420
I by the stuff every oil change at Oreilli's auto parts, it is a diesel motor oil so they sell it in 1 gallon jugs, we need 2 gallons anyway.

This oil should eliminate sludge buildup.
