Interesting call from TireRack

I know what your thinking not another tire thread. Well, yes....but I'm not asking for an opinion, I'm just stating fact here. I received a courtesy call from Luke at TireRack yesterday evening, it seems that the replacement tires "Continental Extreme Contact DWS" that I had order doesn't come in the proper load rating for the C63. The front tires 235/40-18 aren't XL load rated. Apparently my car is 200 lbs too heavy for these tires. Either the car or myself needs to go on a diet. I just order these same exact tires for my E63 last June, and their XL rated, in 245/35-19 and 275/30-19. So I had to get Yokohama AVID ENVigors in 235/40-18 and 265/35-18. I wasn't looking for a high performance summer tires, I just wanted a good long lasting all season tires, that offered great grip in the heat, cold, rain and light snow and also offered long tread life. Face it, some of us, don't drive the car like we stole it. But I do have my moments. I purchased my C63 last July the 31st to be exact, and the rear tires wear bar is flush with the tread. These tires are done, but before I swap them out, I'm going to light them up

Yes, the rear were compliant, just the fronts weren't but I didn't want mis-matched tire manufacturers. The DW were high performance Summer tires, and wouldn't last that long, although they might out last the Pirelli's PZero. I do not want to be replacing tires every 6 months, that is the bottom line in my book.

So, why didn't you just get 245 fronts if they are XL rated? Or did they change the ratings too.

DW tires are XL for the fronts at stock 235/40/18. I know because I have them.

Oddly enough, I got a call this weekend from tirerack too, for a purchase that I made. Load rating was close, but not enough on the new tires, I was told. I was instructed to run 42 psi to compensate.

This is on a 255/30/20 setup in the front of my SL600.

I just got 235/40/18 put on my front last Thur (and they broke my TPMS sensor, but they are replacing it, thats another story), they are indeed XL rated.

However, like you, I recieved an odd call too, I had previously purchased DW's for the rear a few months back, and then I just picked up two DWS's, they called to make sure that I ordered the correct tires and did not make a mistake, and also to tell me that the handling characteristics will be screwy if I mix them up. It was nice of them to notify me of this, and I had already understood that things will be screwy till I replace the rears, which will also be DWS's, in the mean time, I just drive appropriately.

I do appreciate the customers service they provided though.

That's great customer service from Tire Rack, I'm impressed.

I like your thinking. I have some rear tires that could use similar treatment.

Maybe this is a good time to start looking at some C/F parts.

Just for clarification purposes, are you saying even though tirerack doesn't list the 235/40/18 Continental DWS as XL. They are indeed XL rated?

The Continental DWS in 235/40-18 are not XL rated, this is according to tirerack. But the rear 265/35-18 are. That was my issue.

As far as I know, and they did not mention it when they called me, only the fact I had different tires front and rear.. but now that I think about it.. I'm starting to wonder... its too late now though.. ...

Luke (Tirerack) said the the DWS are rated at like 1300 and some lbs, and the car is 200 lbs too heavier then what the tires are rated for. He said due to the weight of the car on the sidewalls, there constantly flexing and they will start to heat up, and eventually have a catastrophic blow out, hopefully not at speed. Imagine having a blow out at 110 mph, boy would that be ugly. He also said that I shouldn't mix tires. I wanted them DWS so bad, because that is what I have been using on my E63, and love them. I drove thru the northeast blizzard after christmas with those tires. I was trying every thing possible to get them, going with different sizes even larger ones. But Luke said that a 245 might hit the spring purch, so that was shot down. The rear were fine, I just needed a solution for the front. And the DWS are not XL rated in a 235 or 245 size tire.

Truth be told, I think you would be fine with a 245/40/18 setup for the front and 265/35/18 for the rear. The 245/40/18 Continental DWs tires are rated at 93, which is rated up to 1433lbs max load. The rears which are rated at 95 or XL is at 1600 pounds max load. But I guess it's better safe than sorry. If it were me, I would go for the 245f/265r setup in Continental DWS.

Also, the 235 Fronts are rated at 91, so those are the ones at 1356 lbs.

235's are what I got... 91Y rating.. I did not even think about that.. and I have 200 miles on those tires already.. guess I will not be racing with them anytime soon....

Even a DWS in 245, wouldn't work, because of the rating. And a 245 tire comes awefully close to the spring purch, depending on the wheel offset. OEM wheels, I think I would have been fine, all things considered. But in my case bigger isn't better. And XL rating would have been

Well, today, I had the Yokohamas mounted at my local installer. The Pirelli PZero's were done and toasted, after my last few days burning them up. At least I got 7200 miles out of them. After the new tires were mounted, I stopped past a gas station to fill up with gas, then got the car up to 85 miles an hour, and discovered that I had some vibration issues with these tires, do to balancing. So I returned back to the shop and had them rebalanced. They static balanced them first this time, I had them road balanced this time, and the weight was off. I had the installer test drive it first, then I took it and punched up to 90 mph with no issues, their was no road noise that some have spoke of from Yokohamas. These are great tires, I just hope that I enjoy them as much as my Continentals on my E63.
