Purge Valve issue.

So Im assuming i have the Purge Valve problem. Car keeps telling me Gas cAp Loose, and i got a CEL. I cant get an appointment till next week at the dealer. Is it bad to drive the car with a faulty Purge Valve?

Thanks guys.

Has happened to me many times. Frustrating to say the least, although i don't think it really means anything that bad. Get it checked out just incase but in the mean time i don't think its dangerous to drive with that specific issue.

Did you check the gas cap? Haha, sorry if that is a stupid question, I know it seems too obvious.

Maybe you need a new cap. If the seal is gone or distorted you will get that warning. Darn emission controls.

I thought if the purge valve was bad the engine would not idle or run well? Maybe that was another issue?

Yeah, checked the cap numerous times. Im assuming it s the Purge Valve due to all the threads i searched on the gas cap issue. I just got an appointment for Thursday, so Ill update with the diagnoses. Car runs perfect though. Only 10k miles on it as of today.

I had the same exact issue on my 2010 C63, about 5 months after I bought it. The dreaded CEL came on, so I took it in. They first diagnose it as the purge valve, but couldn't find anything wrong with it during testing. The real issue was that they have updated their Star Dianostic software and couldn't get the software to communicate with the car. So they let me take the car home, after a few inquiries on my part to MB, to inquire more information on this issue. The dealership was able to locate a Star computer with old software and diagnose my problem. Which turned out to be the purge valve, apparently their is a TSB out on this issue, and MB have released a new purge valve with part number. Problem was solved after a week.

Just so you'll know, you can also get a "Gas Cap" light if you overfill the fuel tank. However, the CEL certainly indicates something else is going on. GL with getting it resolved.

UPDATE: It was the Gas Cap. Replaced, and so far, so good. I did get banged over the head for first service though. $250 for Service A, and $150 for Diff fluid change.

Ah, the cost of enjoying my drives to, and from work.

Nice to hear it was an easy fix Walter! Diff fluid changed? Do you have LSD or Performance package?

UPDATE#2: Gas Cap Loose, CEL back...

Idiots.. They never checked anything, just tried to do a quick fix, so I guess it really is the Purge Valve. I may just purchase, and install a new one myself. Don't have time to be dealing with them. They took a 4 mile "test drive"

I'm sorry to hear they're trying to give you the runaround.

Would you mind telling me where the purve valve is located?

When you open the hood. It's on the driver side, between the radiator, and inner part of the headlight. It's on a mount with, with a harness connection on the top, and two vacum hoses going in, and out. I'll snap a pic later.

Dude, I had the same problem with mine. It happened two weeks after BRAND SPANKIN new delivery. Kept saying gas cap and CEL. I took it in and they really do need to change it. Tell them NO TEST DRIVE Fucckos.

Yeah. I'm just going to buy it, and change it. I'd rather eat the $70 for the new valve, than have some Jagaloons beating my car.

Thank you for the explanation. I'm looking but I'm not sure whether it's one piece I'm looking at or another.

When they say it sticks open and causes a lean state, do you know if we can mechanically open it with our hands? Or will it only open under certain conditions?

^^^It's what we do in a C63. By the way I am all for a home repair job. I cringe when they lug thier steel toe boots across my door frame and cloth door panel...

they provide a couple options
1. flip the rubber on the gas cap
2. stop overfilling your tank
3. clean PV with MAF cleaner and the tubes that attach to it
4. replace possibly

good luck

@ obsidian,

Thanks for the pic. I found the little bugger now.

This may be the part number for the new PV but I don't know for sure. Just looked at my invoice. 000-470-88-93-28

UPDATE:

Tried cleaning my original PV, didn't help. So bought, and installed the updated one PN: 000-470-88-93. So far I took a 40 mile drive, and no warnings. Cost of the new PV $88.

Sounds like you're WINNING

I wish we could bill MB for DIY stuff like this--total BS that we have to resort to doing service ourselves because the dealer feels the need to treat our cars like $5 crack ******

I hope it's fixed now.
