Playing with an M3
Just got back from "playing" with an M3 (one of the nicest looking I've ever seen). We had "significant" speeds without endangering the public. He took the lead, and I kept up with him easily. I could hear that he was maintaining high revs to maximize torque, whereas I never needed to do that (used M mode and kept it mostly in 5th gear). When we finished, he rolled down his window, smiled, and gave me a peace sign.
My main reason for telling the story is to show that performance car drivers can feel comradery, regardless of their particular cars, and that's a lot better than competing. I love my C63, he loves his M3, we respect each other's choices, and it's all cool.

I have only encountered this phenomena once, since owning my C63. Literally this doesn't happen very often.

I once had an M3 owner with his brand new v8 at a track event tell all his freinds that everytime my car left the pits on WOT that he wished his car sounded like that, then finally approached me and asked if there was any aftermarket parts on the exhaust and I told him "nope, bone stock"...the poor guy shook his head in amazement.

We all have instincts to both cooperate and compete, and I guess it comes down to which instinct is stronger for particular people in particular situations (including their moods). Maybe competition is the dominant instinct among most performance car drivers most of the time? It might also depend on where you live and the local car culture. I haven't yet done enough "playing" to gauge this, but the experience yesterday with the M3 guy was definitely one of my high points so far while driving the C63.

Now let me offer a counter to my own story.
Last night, what looked like an Infiniti G37 coupe (IPL?) blew past me and then slowed down. When I caught up with him, after a couple of seconds he gunned it and took off (no cars in the area and a straight wide road). My reaction was WTF, so I gunned it too, but I was in the wrong gear (M5) and he already had at least a second of jump on me, so I never quite closed the gap. At the next light, he turned, probably feeling victorious, whereas I felt like I'd been duped and unable to prove that my car is faster (I assume).
So all of this is a confirmation and confession that I too still have the competitive instinct, even while I say that it's not one of my more admirable qualities!

That would have been a wiser response, but my primal/macho reaction was effectively to say: "how dare you challenge the might of my C63, dost thou not know the power I wield?" To give a little context, it was fairly late at night, I was a bit tired, and had the family in the car, so I wasn't thinking racing. It was more like indignation in response to being unexpectedly slapped in the face.
