Air filter and the Paper above

I just got my ecu back from Cory. I'am changing the air filters out. What is the paper looking filter in the top of the housing and do I leave it in? I need this ASAP please.

Thought that might be what they were but wasn't sure. They're in the top half. I'm waiting your reply.

What have I done now? has someone played a bad joke on the old man? I changed the filters and removed the charcoal paper filters. Car is running fine. Took the with shopping and a friend of mine for a ride. Got in it a little. On the way home the check engine light came on. Oil is OK. Should I have left the charcoal in? I have no idea what to check outside of what I've done. The ecu went in with ease. Any Ideas folks?

the filters might not be sitting in right. i would remove them, then reinstall them and hand tighten every screw, then tighten all the screw diagonally. Should solve the problem

from what I have read.. 2 things to check

1 - the seating of the filters (removing charcoal should not set off the CEL)

2 - maybe you need to call cory about the ECU tune (which I also doubt)

Sorry to hear your having issues, but lots of us have removed the charcoals with no issues at all.

but we all did what I have instructed you to do, I know all I did was pull it out

Pulled codes PO420, PO430, and PO171. Kleemann, told me that the 171 was a bad air flow sensor which was making the other two kick out.

Zeph, my wife says you are a bad influence. I am considering taking out charcoals or switching filters.

Lots of ppl have had success but there are also others who have had CELs right after putting in K&Ns and/or removing the charcoal filters. It's almost a moot point coz you're gaining so little in messing with the air box. Out on the street, even your butt dyno won't be able to tell the difference.

if i'm not mistaken, AFE are dry filters, and shouldn't contaminate your sensors

That's why I pulled the K&N's and put the AFE's in. They do have oil but they claim no sensor problems.

AFE makes both oiled and dry filters.

Haha...I think that you and I are very similar in our ownership...we will do some small things to the C63 to enhance it here and there but won't go ape **** and redo the entire car...I think the car as designed is a perfect piece of engineering and salute those that take it a step higher in performance...

I am not a mechanic but have worked on my previous cars (BMW 3 series, MB C55, X5, Jag, etc...) here and there and I can say that placing the K&N was not that bad. You just have to make sure that if you don't remove the sensors at the intake, that you make sure the airbox seats perfectly. K&N are designed to fit perfectly. They are one of the worlds best filters with a tested track record. That's why I chose them. Also, I know that some other filter types do not have the greased edges but I think slight lubrication is better for the over fit, seal, and long term marginal integrity of the filters. I am 100% that CEL should NEVER come from just changing out air filters or removing charcoals, rather from not having a good seat and fitment from the get go...

Also weird thing was that my car only came with one charcoal filter...
So my theory that removing charcoals will not cause CEL is pretty sound....
