Wider Wheels

I am happy with the OEM 19" wheels but want to get a lot more tire on there. Has anyone actually made the wheels wider?
If so, how much wider can you go?

I'm running 245 for the fronts and 285 for the rears with HR springs on the coupe without any problems.

That sounds good but I have KW coilovers sitting at the lowest setting , I was thinking that I could add another inch to the inside of the wheel as I am running 10mm spacers

I always experience rubbing when I go over 285 on the side where the battery is. Or when I have a hefty passenger in the back lol.

Adding more width is a solution to the over abundance of HP/TQ but not the best one. With an open differential you're just spinning your wheels (pun intended) one at a time. Wider tires are also taller lowering your final gear ratio. A better solution is an LSD and not have to worry about what size tires will fit.

Could I increase tire width and reduce the sidewall so the final gear ratio stays the same? I'm running the factory rears, 285/30/19, and am thinking of going with 305/25/20.

The 305/25/19 is actually the shorter option.

285/30/19 = 25.73" diameter

305/25/19 = 25.00" diameter

You kept the rims the same size in your example. I plan on getting 20" HRE's, and reducing the sidewall to maintain the same overall diameter.

Sorry, missed that detail

305/25/20 = 26.00" diameter so about .28" taller or ~ 1%.

That shouldn't be too noticeable visually or driving right? 1/4" of tread should wear off relatively quickly.

HaHaHa ... the 1/4" of tread will wear off on the drive home...LOL well hopefully not that quickly.

Otherwise your actual sidewall profile will be shorter and the tires will look good. Your speedo will read 1% slower than you are actually going.

Watch out for potholes and other wheel damaging road hazards.

You will not likely notice any difference in performance as it will be slight, the car will look great and hopefully you will be able to hook better and notice a slight improvement on the track out of the corners depending on the rubber you choose.
