OEM LSD Install - Need Some Help

What's up fellas,

I'm in the process of acquiring an OEM LSD from a 2011 C63 locally. This of course includes the diff and OEM diff Housing.

In terms of Install, I assume it will be less involved compared to swapping out for an aftermarket LSD.

What will I require for install.

Diff Fluid / Seals? anything else?

Realistically, how many shop hours would you expect a competent shop to charge for an OEM Diff install?

Thanks In advance
Kris

Should be straight forward, of course put in new seals and fluid. Remove the axles which is the hard part. I think you need to remove 2 lower control arms to get the shift out. The difference case itself I think only has 3 bolts. Two accessed through the trunk. Take the drive shift of with another 4 bolts I believe. Your looking at a maybe 3-4 hrs

But wouldn't I simply have to bolt up the new Diff housing after I remove the old one from the Drive shaft? I wouldn't have to open up the new pumpkin would I?

You will need new seals/fluid/sealant/bearings probably. You'll be able to use your ring gear.
All you need is to lift the car and remove lower control arm as if you are going to install new springs. Them remove axles/driveshaft and swap pumpkins.
I would say 5h job.

That write up is great....but you only have to do the first couple of steps because you have the whole diff. I would still change out the seals and bob's your uncle

Correct. Just install new axle shaft seals on the "new" differential housing.

Get them from MB....i don't think these will be pricey at all bro. just a quick note, don't bend them going in...a couple of taps with a rubber mallet is all it needs to seat them.

Do the seals really need to be replaced? How many miles on the unit?

MB book time to replace seals 2.7 hours per side. Pinion seal 3.2 hours to replace.

if you arent a professional mechanic and dont have a lift, dont expect to get this done in 4hrs. You're also going to need some xzn triple square sockets. If you're going to replace the seals, replace the breather too. The side seals leak on occasion. Pinion seals very rarely leak though. good luck

Hey Mort, the unit has roughly 21K KM. Didn't realize it would be an additional 5 hours to change the seals.

It Would, but realistically at 21,000 KM do you really think the seals are no good?

I have no intention in doing this myself, I simply inquired as to a reasonable "shop time" to install the diff. Want to ensure my installers billable time is in line.

They don't take that long. 15-20min tops if you take your time. The time Mort posted probably includes removing the axle. Not when the diff is sitting on your bench.

Inspect them then. KM on the unit doesn't really matter. What if they were damaged when the diff was being removed?

Are you a betting man? Take a gamble then

Lol, When I read 5 hours to change the seals it got me thinking

Since its a straight forward swap to get the new ones in, I might as well replace the seals too. I get the Diff next week. Hoping to have it installed the week after.

Thanks so much guys for the help. Will let you know how it goes once complete.

PM me the shop bro,

I still haven't decided who will be doing the install. Getting a few quotes as we speak.

Car Goes in tomorrow for the LSD install! Cant wait

Was quoted 4 Hours labor by Eurocharged Canada for the swap. I went ahead and purchased my own fluids (Motul Competition 75w140).

Went in today to get it installed but after close inspection, we decided to swap the seals out as well. The Dealer didn't have them in stock, so tomorrow I pick them up.

Just a FYI - I will have the stock Open Diff / pumpkin after tomorrow. For those who want to go with an aftermarket LSD, you can use this stock pumpkin to install the LSD. This way you do not have too much down time with your car. Just swap it out once you install the LSD. Throw me an offer for it. Located in the GTA.

Will keep you all posted!

Shoot me an offer for anyone interested.
