$57,000 for headbolts?!?!?! An epic read.

^ Exactly
Especially since nobody has really bothered to fight this in court (C). Since there's no real coordinated threat to MB, they can keep ignoring them one at a time like this.

And since there are no accidents, deaths or gross disfiguremenrpts (to my knowledge) it can't really be argued it's a safety issue nor is there anything to cause any stratospheric settlements even if court action did occur. The big dough comes into play when there are multiple loss of life, and you knew about it or at least should have (see: Takata).

The biggest reason was the confines of this particular engine bay. There just isn't the room to work that the C cars have. The hood does have a service position, but that doesn't give access to the sides of the engine. I had to pull all of the cooling stuff off to get to the front of the engine if I wanted to pull off the timing cover and replace the guides, which I do, and once that's out removing the motor assembly is trivial. It's like 10 bolts and two wires. I did have to install a lift, but who among us isn't looking for an excuse to put in a lift?
One last thing on space. The heads are darn near up against the sides of the engine bay. Normally you just need to pop the heads up a half inch or so to clear the dowels. When a bolt is broken off in the block, like the one below, you need to pick the head waaaaaaay up and over to get it to clear the bolt. I don't think it was possible. Observant readers will note that I didn't actually know the head was broken off until after I pulled the motor, but sometimes we do the right thing even if we don't know why.
And he posted a pic that explains a little better, especially on the drivers side:

Yeah I just reached the end of that thread. Seems like a pretty good dude, and would be a welcome addition here.

He seems pretty even keeled. Im thinking its pretty apparent when you're there, and with only 40-50 of these in NA, with about 200 worldwide, its pretty hard to call on someone who has been there, done that.
It sure has curbed my secret longing for an R63 though! Ill just get a wagon or a GLE63

Why? It's a nearly 10 year old car with 100,000 miles on it. What do people expect Mercedes to do? They sell new vehicles and CPO the good used ones...they could care less about older Mercedes. I do agree jacking up the cost of repair parts is very dishonest though.
Now many dealerships will repair old ones for the money most of the time, but a $57K quote is a mean way of saying take it somewhere else.
BMW has yet acknowledge the rod bearing issues on their older M3/M5s either. They will service the ones in warranty, but once that runs out all bets are off.
"Common wisdom says buying a ten year old AMG Mercedes out of warranty is certain to cause immense pain and maritial strife. This money is basically year three of our three years of savings just in case. It's supposed to be sitting there in case we need it, but instead I'm going to drive it around. "
Yeah he found that out real quick and bought a car he never should have.
