hi, did this start when you put the 20's on ? does this go through the steering wheel ? or through the whole car? first thing i would do is a wheel balance

sounds like that's the problem, its the cheapest thing to try anyway. have a check when they balance you don't have a buckled wheel as this could cause this to happen, but i hope not.

you guys are doing it all wrong, the SL/CL both have this same problem, wont be the wheels or the ballance if its the same i'm thinking of.
mine does it at around 70-80mph, shakes teh hell outa the passanger seat too.
from another thread, looks like its the Tranny Mounts, someone had them changed and it never did it again.

it would seem that since he had new tyres on the rear and car now has a vibration through the car a re-balance would be the first and cheapest option. if this doesnt cure it then tranny mounts would be a good place to check after.

Same issue
I am going to do the balance first and if not that then take it back to MB. I got their extended warrenty and they better fix it. It actually did that when I test drove the car and they said it was probably bad gas. Go Figure.
I'll let you all know from my end too.

Goliath AND Beachum are both right!
It seems to me that a while back someone else posted about a serious vibration and they went through quite a number of repairs before finally solving it. And Goliath is right! It was the tranny mounts that we're at fault! Several people reported this same problem. But Beachum also has a point. I just put on four new tires on my CL, and it was smooth as silk on the road, but once I hit 70 on the highway, I got some vibration. Although the tires we're balanced when they we're installed, after a rebalance, they were MUCH improved!! So worth checking both out. If it's a serious vibration though, it sounds like the mount issue previously posted.

Just to update an old thread, i have the exact problem. Balanced wheels, replaced forward drive shaft flex disc, replaced tranny mount, all with no luck. I guess I'll have to try the rear flex disc, as well as motor mounts.

I've had a similar problem on my 01 CL600. The first time it happened, it got progressively worse over about a 3 month period. I also began smelling that burnt metal smell coming from the rear of the car. I took it to the shop a couple of times and they couldn't find anything (surprise). It finally got so bad one day that one day on the highway I had to pull over and stop. It felt like the bottom was going to fall out of the car. Took it in and it was the driveshaft. had it replaced and didn't have the problem for about 3-4 years. It started again about 6 months ago, but no burnt metal smell. Its been in the shop for 3 weeks (I know this sounds ridiculous, but its the stealership, and I get a free loaner, so I let them take their time). They've been trying the balance thing, but apparently to no avail. Ive had the tranny and motor mounts replaced before and that fixed a different vibration. I might just have them replace the tranny mounts again and see if that works.
