fan running constantly

I've recently brought a clk230k convertible it's done 128k car starts and drives fine gear box is abit stiff but not unbearable. the only problem with the mechanically is that the radiator fan runs constantly when you start it ,there is a 5-10second delay when you start the engine until the fan starts running but then it stays on until you switch the engine off . The coolant temperature sensor was in peices so have replaced this but this didn't make a difference. Why is the fan running constantly please help
