turbo clk 500!!
Has any Chicago area people seen this car anywhere? I would like to find out how everything was done. The sound of this car on the video is awesome. It looks like it has st Charles Mercedes license plate frames so I wonder if they know who's car it is.

I have been dying to somehow get a turbo on my clk320 since I bought my car 2 years ago. If a 500 can make this kind of power, I'm sure a 320 can make some decent numbers too. I would just like to know how much this cost and where it was done so I can figure out if I can actually do this someday.

Ok update! I called Mercedes of st Charles today and asked the first service person who answered if they have seen a black turbo clk500 ever come in the dealer, the guy laughed for a second and said "yep, I see that car in here everyday." He said one of the best techs that works there owns and built the car. I asked him if he could transfer me back to him so I can talk to him about it but he said that the tech was really busy. He also said I should just stop in sometime and talk to him in person if I'm out near st Charles. So I guess I'm going to try to run by there sometime soon..... And I'll try to get him to join mbworld so he can tell everyone how this was done!

finally met the guy who built this.
I stopped by the dealer in st Charles on Friday afternoon and I didn't see this car anywhere around where I assumed was all the employee cars. I thought I would go in and ask if the tech that owns and built the car is there and the car was in the shop on a lift with the guy working on it. I asked if I could go back and talk to him so the service writer introduced me to him and I had a chance to look at everything he did while the car was up in the air. After talking to this tech for a while I quickly realized this would be a little over my head to attempt this. Although none of it looks hard to do, there are a lot of little specific details that are pretty important and I would probably miss something and screw everything up. I begged him to take me for a spin in his car since I have never seen anything like it. GOD DAMN! That thing is absolutely insane! If anyone is within a decent drive to this dealer, it's 100% worth your time to go see this car!

Yes, it is a rear mount setup. But it's done really well. When he put the car down off the lift you can't see any pipes running under the car. He made the drivers side converter curve in front of the trans and merge with the passenger side converter and had a single pipe running down the passenger side of the tunnel under the car. He then ran the charge pipe up the drivers side of the tunnel and up the drivers side of the trans. He said he has put close to 40,000 miles on the setup so it must work good. He even had the snow tires on it because he drives it every day including when its snowing. He has the air intake pipe routed into the spare tire area with some vents around it so the turbo gets nice clean air all year round. I was also a little disappointed when I found out it was a rear mount but hey, making over 500hp at the crank and having it last that long without being able to tell there is a turbo there is extremely impressive in my mind. Plus it just sounds so bad *** in person.

It will work fine on a dual exhaust as long as both sides end up going into the turbo somehow. Obviously easier to merge them early on and split them again post-turbo.
I think it is impressive, it's just the compromised heat efficiency/management which isn't ideal.

He said something about how he might run the pipe that comes from the wastegate to the passenger side of the rear bumper and add a second set of exhaust tips to make it a quad setup. But he said he thinks that might be dumb since the only time exhaust will be flowing out of the passenger side will be when the wastegate is open at wot only. I think that would be kind of cool but hey, it's not my car.

I don't know a ton on the specific details of heat efficiency and management but it doesn't have any trouble spooling or making boost fast because he said he has full boost by 3000 rpm and i definitely believe it. It just shredded the tires in first and second gear when he nailed it

Oh and I almost forgot! I asked him if he every ran the car at the dragstrip and he said not yet but Mercedes of st Charles is planning a track day at union grove for sometime around the middle of May. He said he will be running his car then. I guess his whole family drives modded amgs that he does all the work to. His brother has a c55 with a tune, cat delete, ported and polished intake manifold and some other things that he always races against and he said just from 40 mph to 80 he pulls 4-5 car lengths on him every time.

A large amount of energy that drives the turbo comes from thermal expansion of exhaust gas. Not just the physical flow. Therefore having them as close to the heads as possible is beneficial for max response power and efficiency. Of course this still works pretty well.
I can definitely see the problem of getting the exhaust to the tips on the other side of the bumper.

Old thread, but I’m guessing the guy had his exhaust heat wrapped?
I installed a massive rear mount turbo but I really need to hammer the throttle to see good boost. Once it’s boosting the car flies
