2005 CLK500 Cab transmission bites the dust

Well that is not how i wanted to end the week! Thursday night the car just quite at the end of a hard launch, you know just for fun, restarted no problem, except for a fairly loud whine. Took to dealer Friday morning for Service B and diagnosis. Today I get the call, asking how bad to I want to fix the beast.... Yep the front pump is toast and the trans pan has a LOT of metal.... Guessing PO did not ever service the trans? $7000 and a week later and it should be like new again. At least they gave me a new C300 4matic to drive.

What mileage was your car at? I've been debating whether or not to get the transmission fluid flushed and serviced... at 97k

Definitely do it. It's advised to do it every 60,000 km (fluid + filter).

Right at 97K on the car. Don't wait ! There were no symptoms prior to the failure and it did not go into Limp mode.

Yes the $7000 is for a new trans, and also includes replacing the rear main seal and the B service. They are quoting $5000 to rebuild mine including the other work. I will be checking with an Indy Trans shop that I like on Monday as well.

None for now
I'm at 96,XXX and have an '05 CLK500 as well. I'm assuming the previous owner did not change anything. Is it worth it for a DIY or should I just take it to the dealer?

I recommend a fluid and filter change every 40K miles on the 722.9 (and it won't hurt for the 722.6, either). If the service history is unknown - change it! As for it being a DIY, if you have the facilities to safely life and support the vehicle level with all four wheels off the ground giving you enough room to work underneath, and you are willing to invest in a few tools, then go for it. Dealers charge around $400. Parts are about $120-$150. Even if you buy the Assenmacher pump, you'll still save over dealer prices on the first change.
