CPS failure and replacement choices

The car is an 05 CLK320 with 66k on it, that gets light use.

Last night we drove it to dinner before going to a show. It was about a 20 minute drive and ambient temp was 100F (38C). Parked in the shade at the restaurant. Car drove fine, no rough idling, no loss of power.

After 90 minute we got in the car again to drive to the show and the engine would crank but not fire. No CEL.

We abandoned it, took a taxi to the show and back again, praying that it would start after it had cooled down even more (having read on-line that it was likely the Camshaft Position Sensor)

Luckily it started first time (5 hours after we had parked it), threw a CEL but drove fine on the way home. Code reader came back with P0335 - indeed a CPS fault

I assume that this isn't a one-off due to high temps and the CPS is faulty even after 66k? Time to replace?

Online, I see options for a MB one at $190, Bosch at $70ish or Meyle at $45. I am leaning towards the Bosch one - any reason to go with the MB one?

I understand that installation is a PITA

That seems quite expensive. I would buy MB. I believe Bosch had some occasional quality issues with these.

I've heard the same about bosch CPS. I forked out 180$ for the MB one when mine went out as i dont like being stranded! My C230 used to do that a lot to me..

Buy the Bosch; you will save $ and you won't regret it. I've been running a Bosch Crankshaft Position Sensor for a few years and no problems. The install was a pain, and I run with a spare in the trunk now.

I did this a couple of months ago with the Bosch. No problem whatsoever so far. But it is a tough install. Follow the DIY instructions and you'll be ok. Also get one of those long magnet wands.

Not every Bosch sensor is going to fail and not straight away. There was just a period where there were quality issues with select items. It will be well past I would guess but you never know how old some inventory is. Some people went through 2-3 of them. Chances are you will be fine.

Just to clarify my OP for future readers as I stated that it was a Camshaft Position Sensor that had failed, as it was in-fact a Crankshaft Position Sensor.

My local Indy only charged me $79 labor to install which was a gift after I looked at where it had to be fitted.
