Oil Burning smell

So, I have searched the forum and found some great suggestions on this issue.

These suggestions have led me and my shade tree mechanic coworker to observe and conclude that the problem is the large Cam Plug that is leaking oil.

He has agreed to replace it, but I don't know the name for this part. When I call the dealer I want to give him the "official" part name.

Does anyone know the name or better yet have the part number?

Thanks!

'the large Cam Plug' ? Are you referring to the solenoid gaskets? They leak all the time. I wouldn't call them large and there is more than one but all the same size. See this thread, I believe its the same engine..

This is one of the threads I was referring to. See posts 8 and 9 specifically for description and pictures.

I started that thread, and it was leaking cam plugs. I think the engine in the 350 has them as well. Everybody on here calls them cam plugs. I'm pretty sure any parts guy who is not brand new will know what you are talking about. They are pretty cheap.

Thanks Yidney. If just one is leaking should I just replace them all?

Also, can I just order them online instead of going through the dealer?

It would save me about 2 hrs of drive time.

Great - thanks Plutoe. So I should replace both even though just one is leaking?

Might as well do them all since they are cheap. Aren't there 4 - two large and two small? Anyway, yes, you can buy anything online - original MB parts. Parts.com and some other sites are actually a "front" of sorts for dealers. The MB dealer is the one in Naperville, Illinois, and you get everything at a pretty good discount.

Those are the cam plugs. The larger on is part number A0009985690. That smaller is A0009985590. I think my dealer charged about $15 for both. I would replace them both.

We could only find three. Two small and one large. Seems to be working - no leaking and no more burnt oil smell!

Thanks everyone for your help.

The cam plugs that leak are on the left bank - one small and one large. On the right bank, there is a small plug for the end of the intake cam, but in place of the larger plug on the end of the exhaust cam is the oil centrifuge. It can leak, too, but is an easy and also inexpensive repair - $20 for an aftermarket cover and three bolts.
