What can I expect to pay for a CLK55?

Hi all,
I am on a search for a 2001 or 2002 CLK55. What can I expect to pay for one in decent shape? Ideally I want one under 120K miles, I wont buy from a dealership as only private party which narrows down my inventory. Seems like these don't pop up for sale too often. What can I expect to pay private party and if anyone has bought one in the last year I would love to hear what you paid, mileage, condition and such.

This is self explanatory. What are they going for?

Get on cars.com/autotrader.com/cargurus.com

Search what you want in your area

See what they are going for on average

There will always be outliers, and you can haggle down on price. No different then any other car.

I paid 13k for 2004 AMG with 81k miles, original everything, after I had to pay for a leaky valve cover gasket and a couple of small things.

Coupe or cab? And it depends on your definition of 'decent'. A one owner car that's never left the southwest, always garaged, averaged less than 700 miles per month for the last 14 or 15 years, been treated well, and not on a dealer lot? Sounds like the owner needs the garage space more than the money, which doesn't make them desperate. Hey, you might find that car for $7K, but I seriously doubt it.

One thought, excluding dealers also eliminates some very good cars. Cars on consignment, sold by owners who want nothing to do with the average buyer and their financial issues. You might try MBCA. They have a large number of good owners willing to sell to the public.

A regular W208 CLK55 with 15 years of wear, been through 3 to 5 owners, needs some maintenance but runs well, has a straight body with good original paint, no electronic woes, and a good interior - that's 7 to $14K. Maybe.

YMMV

Thanks,
I am looking for a coupe. I actually found a really nice 2001 with only 63K miles in great shape here on the East Coast. The guy's asking price $10900 which seem fair. The car is 550 miles from me as I am not opposed to catching a flight and driving it back after a PPI as I have done this before many years ago with a E39 M5 purchase.

I paid $6000 for one with 190K miles. It is a very nice looking car! Clean and runs like a champ. It was a southern car all its life and was brought up north to NY from the person I bought it from. It never saw a winter. The barn that I wintered it in collapsed and the car was totaled. I settled with the insurance company for $7500 and had it completely restored for $9,000.

Oh yeah, it is a 2001 CLK55AMG.

KBB does not really apply too well to AMG and BMW M cars especially ones 10+ years old. I am looking for real world prices of what people paid.

Any car "price guide" should be 100% ignored for specialty cars. They don't really take into account quantity and demand, and overall are innacurate.

I just checked an excellent condition(top 3% of cars), 50k mile, private party 04 and 05 CLK55 coupe. 13,700 and 16,800. While that's far closer then I expected, good luck getting an 05 at that price, and the 04 I wouldn't pay that much for.

finding a nice w208 55 is going to be tough. I found two that seemed decent but one guy did not like me asking about brakes, tires, rotors and overall car maintenance and said car is in good shape and needs nothing but got pissed when I started asking about history. Second guy just disappeared when I asked the same questions. Both of these cars where about 3-5 hours away from me so could not just go look at it or else would of done that and asked in person.

I am finding that the 10+ yr old AMG and same holds true for BMW M cars is that they are very affordable and many people can now afford these cool cools with many people very young people who don't stay on top of them and just drive them regardless if it is leaking some oil, in need of brakes, rotors and such and when they go to sell it they take offense when someone starts asking about these things. Just my 2 cents. I use to have an e36 m3 and I can't tell you how many of these I looked at that were beat up and in need of $1000's of dollars.

Wow. And that's why they are called stealerships lol. I always figure in the $12-18k range dealerships have ~$2k of wiggle room to still make a profit. Apparently they had over 3.

There is no rule of profit in dealer used cars. It all depends on what they paid for each car.

I just paid $15K for a 2004 CLK55 AMG Cabriolet with 64K in very good shape except for the front bumper cover which is cracked in Seattle, WA. Listed at $16,850 by the dealer. Pretty rare car around these parts. Next closest market is the San Francisco area to find one. Needs the usual things for an 11 year old car. Brakes, valve cover gaskets, oil change, filters. Needed an EGR and pipe because the old guy who owned it never got it out and let it rip so it had a considerable carbon build up. Still all in all very happy with my new race car. This car is way faster than my 1998 SL500 Sport.

Hi Chappy. I'm the 3rd owner. Bought it from a forum here 7 yrs ago after my 2001 Silver CLK55 hit 60k and I wanted a low mileage W208 replacement. Black on black w/ chrome wheels and, I've gotta say, the Mercedes paint is amazing because I leave that black car outside in the hot Florida sun with little TLC and it has held up very well. I should garage it but, sitting in the driveway, it gives the house a lived-in look. It's good to come here and see a few of us OG forum guys still around! LOL. I remember 15 years ago I was trying to decide between the CLK430 and the rare but available CLK55. I came across a forum post to the effect of "I'm a middle aged man with a wife and kids and not a lot things in my life give me happiness. This car [CLK55] gives me happiness." Right then and there, I made my decision! I still remember that feeling of getting that silver CLK55 delivered to San Diego from Sacramento. My first new car and oh, what fun!
Best,
Pigman

Great story! Couldn't agree more though my g/f at the time (then fiancée, now wife and mother of two) didn't understand spending that much on a car. I always told her "it's cheaper than therapy" lol

I wouldn't mind a low mile W208.

While I preferred the look and performance of the 05, the 01 was alot more comfortable.

Chappy, you going to sell your car once the new C63 coupe comes out?

Only if I needed the garage space for a CLK63 Black Series!

The value is so low now it's not worth selling....unless....the right offer comes along.
