Are there differences in brands of diesel fuel?

After being a Mercedes-Benz diesel owner in the 1970's and 80's, I have been away from the diesel experience. I have a new 2008 R320CDI coming in late August. I have wondered if there is any real difference in the brands of ultra low sulfer diesel?

I know from my prior years with diesel, you wanted to make sure you purchased diesel from a station that ideally sold plenty of diesel so it was being turned regularly AND that the place maintained their tanks.

I would appreciate feedback on this.

There are only a few refineries in the united states. They all get their fuel from the same refineries.

The only differences is storage quality and additive packages.

Buy from high-volume stations (truck stops) that keep the pumps and their station clean.

There is a problem with truck stops. The filler pipes are enormous and flow high volumes (easy to overfill). These pipes are often way too big for the CDI or Bluetec filler holes.

Older VW and MB diesels have bigger filler holes.

Every truck stop has small diesel nozzles, sometimes you just have to look for them.
