Factory LEDs in Rear Dome Light cover?

Factory LEDs in Rear Dome Light cover?
Hey guys, just bought my '76 240D and have been exploring the car a bit and found something kinda strange. The rear dome light clear lens cover has what appears to be two LED lights integrated into it, aimed sorta down and rearwards, but I have never seen them light up nor do I know what they are for (to light up the rear parcel shelf maybe, or maybe they light up with the turning signals or brake lights when viewed thru the rear view mirror?) Does anyone know? I didn't even think LEDs existed back then. Thanks - Mike
