Initial running issues.

Initial running issues.
Hi all, so I have a 1990 E230 Wagon. I've read as much as I can on the board, YouTube, but now I'm mystified by the number of potential causes.
The engine will start easily, but will run for 2-8 seconds before stalling. I will need to restart several times (it's getting worse) before it will continue running. It's general running is a little ruff, poor idle, hesitant take off.
I've noticed a few indicators: rubbish fuel economy, fuel smell at start, fuel pump sings appropriately for a second or so upon ignition activation (good I think), no noticeable difference between cold and hot temp's, sometimes it starts up 1st shot unpredictable, economy gauge reacts differently when it's going to continue running during the first few seconds.
Any advice would be appreciated,
Thanks Shards.

Hi plutoe,
Thank you for replying. Unfortunately not, in Australia W124 wagons are still expensive, nice 300E's sell for 8-12k! (US7-11k) Mines quite a nice one, cosmetically that is. So I had to trade off on the books too get it at lesser price.
Thanks Shards

Out Of Control!!
Ok so the outside looks great, however based on your original post you haven't given us any indication on what you have done(what have you changed) or not done to let the car run like crap----even in dry down under!!

Hi Plutoe, I haven't done anything since it received its road worthy certificate, except drive it 1000kms. I presume spark is ok, so fuel is where the problem is. Do you have any actual advice?
Thanks Nick

"Do you have any actual advice?"------That depends on your capabilities and diagnostic tools---as an example are you a sheep farmer or a surfer living with Mom!!
Sheep and goat farmers have all sorts of tools----surfers typically have what woman crave and it ain't a wrench!!
