My understanding is this: Vehicles can have 1 or 2 rear fog lights in the US. Some manufacturers don't like having 2 because it has the appearance of the brake lamps being illuminated whenever they are on. That is why they only put the 1 rear fog light. Regulations also state that if there is only one fog light, it must be on the driver's side.
Another thing I find interesting: If you look at some other Mercedes such as the G-wagon, it only has one reverse light which is mounted opposite the rear fog light.

Most Mercedes only have One rear fog light on the Drivers side of the vehicle..
US cars on the l/r...UK, Japan and other RHD countries on the R/R
Smart cars have one as well..also One reverse light on the drivers side again depends on RHD or LHD car

reason for that is to separate them from brake lights ,just in case behind person think your brake lights stuck, another thing most cars approching you and passing over left side and that is where you need extra light.altough bmw got both fog lights, but in europe one is most common and looks cool and safe too.
front fog lights are kinda week on this model,or just in my case.
that what i was thinking .....use more opinions to get better picture..
cheers

Purely historical for German cars. Until some time in the 80s or so, only a single rear fog light was allowed in Germany. And that had to be on the left. Then they allowed two, and many manufacturers used that as a cheap marketing trick to make a car appear more upscale. Mercedes never jumped on that bandwagon and still designs the switch so that it turns off automatically, and you do not keep blinding everyone behind you.
US-spec cars do not normally come with rear fog lights anyway. Considering the poor nuisance-benefit ratio, I am not exactly unhappy about it.

HOW TO RIG BOTH REAR FOGS TO WORK ANY ONE SIDE FOG BENZ
Wish there were attachments here. I wired mines to work on both sides. Mines looks cool and i got the updated led tails. Only took one wire to run from left tail wire to the right bypass harness to spliced extra (same) wire on the right harness. My 97 looks 2015!

As for looking cool...in the last ten years I think I have used my rear foglights fewer times than the number of fingers on either of my hands.
