Whining noise from engine.

Hi all,

My 99 e320 is making a noise on idle which sounds like it is a bearing in a pulley somewhere. Does anyone know how to test for bad pulleys?

A gaggle of MB's
There are two "likely" suspects:

1) the belt tensioner - original belt tensioner is subject to failure and was later replaced with "updated" part - this is the mechanism that provides proper tension on the accessory belt.

2) there is a "roller" and a idler pulley on the upper left facing the engine that could also be facing failure.

Check for the soruce of the sound - then search the forum for correct procedure.

If any of the parts "fail" - it will destroy your belt - stop your generator - and you will be dead in the water.

Keep the beat !

Take the belt off and turn everything by hand.
Often with slow turning speed bad bearing will not make the noise, but move it side to side and observe for excessive play.

it is a bad idler pulley on your belt. Since the center is made of plastic if not serviced it will fail and throw off the belt. The part is cheap at about 36$ US. It is easily replaced with common tools and can be done in a few minutes.
