E-500 Gas Mileage Improving with Age
My E-500 now has ~9400 miles and has been getting much better gas mileage the past 4000 miles.
On a recent trip from my home in San Clemente, CA to and from Fort Collins, CO, I averaged over 23 MPG for the entire trip including the travel around Fort Collins and up to Estes and Rocky Mountain National Park.
On the 296 mile leg the second day of my trip from Grand Junction, CO to Fort Collins, I achieved 27.0 MPG at an average speed of 70 MPH. I was really surprised to see such high mileage on this leg as it went over three mountain passes and through considerable constuction near Denver and up to Fort Collins. It was especially fun to blow past Audi's and SUV's going up the hills.
Returning home last Sunday, I made the entire 1095 miles in one day with several rest and food stops, From Fort Collins to Las Vegas, where I lost some pocket change in a Casino but enjoyed a good buffet dinner, I achieved 25.7 MPG for the 687 mile leg at an average speed of 74 MPH, and for the entire 1095 mile trip that day, I achieved 25.0 MPG at an average speed of 71 MPH. All these average speeds are based upon "engine time on" only and were taken from the instrument cluster indication for a particular leg or day.
Overall, I now have a 20.6 MPG average for my 9400 miles at an average speed of 41 MPH. ( I have never reset the second storage segment on this window) Many of my miles have been high speed highway miles. The car has the Continental stock tires and has performed GREAT overall. It appears like I get much better mileage on gas that I get in western states outside of Caliornia (Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona). On a trip last month to the San Francisco Bay area, I never achieved over 23.5 MPG on any leg.
I've attached some photos of my cluster showing the information noted above for your info.
I'd be interested in hearing others experience in this area, and hope that my new car with the NAV system that I will get in late July does as well as this one. I never achieved this type of mileage with my previous, less powerful, '97 E-320.

I have 2000 miles on mine. Just did a 200 mile trip with the cruise set at 88 and avg speed of 79 MPH and got 21.5 MPG. I thought that was pretty good. I ran the air the whole time too.
BTW I noticed at 88 MPH that the rpm's were just shy of 2800

I picked up my E500 Sport two days ago and the MPG has been 15.1 during the first 280 miles. Do you recall your MPG when car was new? Much of my driving has been on freeway, but in SoCal that's 10-15MPH.

When my car was new, I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the mileage, but on a trip when it had about 3000 miles, I got just over 21 MPG for the 1600 mile trip. It now does better.
My tires are the original, Continentals for my non-sport E-500, and I run the rears at 34psi and fronts at 30psi. I do not have the pulling to the right problem now, but when car was new it did pull to right until I lowered the air pressure in the front tires to 27psi.
The air conditioner was on Auto for my trip to and from Colorado and temperatures were as high as 108 with most above 90.
My cruise control was usually set at 10mph over the posted speed limit so was at 80-85 for much of the trip.

I have about 3,500 miles on my E500. I get about 13-15mpg city and 24.5mpg highway. I run the air at all times and do acclerate hard often. Not great city mileage but I'm happy with the highway numbers.
