Major oil leak E320 Bluetec - Rear Engine Oil Seal??
I have a major oil leak in my 07’ E320 Bluetec 95kmiles. I have a stream of oil coming out(engine running) from an apparent drain hole appx. 6 inches above and slightlyforward of the oil dipstick base (driver side). Spoke to my Indy mechanic on the phone and he seems to think that this is aninternal drain track of some sort. Afterreading hundreds of historical posts, I’m thinking that I have the preverbal“rear engine oil seal leak”. This is mysixth diesel engine car and never experienced this malady. I have changed theoil filter, turbo seals, replaced the oil cap per serv. bulletin with a newerbetter sealed cap. No change. Thebalance of the engine is spotless, with no evidence of other leaks. Looking for feedback, confirmation andpossible repair estimate if I’m correct.

I got under my '07 Bluetec today, have had a steady spot on the garage floor. Pulled the pans, and I hope that's I am not experiencing the dreaded rear main seal either, but it's not coming from the top of the engine bay and it's more of an ooze that what you have thankfully. I think I'll leave the pans off for few days and see if I can find a track. There's at least a quart of oil in the insulation on the pans, and those things are a booger to get off with just a floor jack and jackstands. Probably going to be double tough to get back on. (I am at 90K also).

Good Luck and I hope you find the location of the leak. When you mention pans, I take it you mean the engine splash guard/skirt. There are six bolts, and it was easier then I thought to get off. Once the skirt is removed, watch out for the standing oil absorbed by the spongee side of the skirt. I removed it with the E320 on jackstands. When my engine is running, I could actually see the oil ejactulating out of the engine block location mentioned earlier. Let me know how you make out. I was advised that if it was a rear engine seal oil would be coming through the bell housing and out two plastic tabs on the bottom of the housing. I did not recall seeing those tabs, and my oil is departing the engine a few inches above the oil dipstick base.

Could the dipstick tube have worked loose?
Isn't the dipstick at the front of the engine (Like the V6 DCI)?

I thought if oil was running out of the weep hole it was most likely the oil cooler that sits in the v of the block. I believe those are a common problem. I would try and research the oil cooler and see if that fits your complaint.

As it turned out in my case, the leak originated from the inter-cooler. My Indy mechanic took apart the top third of the engine. He was not too familiar with the late model diesels. Unfortunately, he cut his teeth on my W211. I researched the crap out of this problem and a number of forum members nailed it. Hope you save a few bucks resulting from this thread. It cost me big time in terms of cash and time. Good luck and please update me when your issue has been resolved. Other than this issue, how has the car been treating you?

you can fix it
took the car into the dealer and confirmed it is an oil cooler leak. $2800 est for repair. Decided to do this myself. Took me 35 hours. Spent a few hrs cleaning the intake manifold & EGR. It was very thick and messy.
Steps: 1. remove air filters and air duct
2. remove charge air pipe connected to turbo
3. turbo
4. left fuel rail (drivers side)
5. fuel supply pipe
6. Cross over fuel tube
7. intake manifold
8. oil cooler

most of this are gaskets and screws. This job requires attention to detail and I used lots of post-it notes to keep track of where things belonged. I would only recommend this job if you had a guide to follow. Mercedes mx steps or join ALLDATAdiy.com

WIS Documents needed please.
I have a major oil leak on my W211.Would like to see if this is something I want to get my hands dirty with before really beginning the job. Could you kindly email me the docs and eventual pictures as you referred to..? It will be highly appreciated.
My email is MueenKanwar@hotmail.com.
If you have any other diagrams/ pics of the w211 which You have not mentioned, and You are willing to share, then I would certainly like to have a look through that material as well.
Looking forward to hearing from You soon.
Kind Regards,
Mueen Kanwar

Hey, guys we started with main seal and end up with oil cooler, sowhat about the main seal guys? Have any one replace it? I had two times with my local mechanic. I had to go through the oil cooler job, because they were blaming it leaking the first time main seal was leaking. Now they replaced main seal again and it still leaks. Do you know any tricks or what wasn’t done properly, and why would it leak again? First seal plate was steel, but second time aluminum. Also aluminum one is covering oil canals from the top engine. I don't know if that makes a difference.
