So, I need a new key

Well, I want a new key, I don't need it.

One of my keys is cracked across the lock button portion of the plastic face.
I'd like a new/used case to transfer my working innards to.

I understand that this is the very definition of first world problems, but it bugs me.

The remote works fine, I'd just like to find a shell or broken unit to scavenge the outer shell from.

Anyone have a old inoperative remote they'd like give to the cause?
Or a link to such things?

Thanks!

You can get them on ebay. On youtube, there are videos that show you how to remove the innards. About $13+

That's the way to go. But don't throw away your old shell until everything is working properly on the new key. Some have a hidden chip inside (in addition to the visible one) which needs to be transferred to the new one as well. Be mindful that "transferring the internals" is a must and not optional.
Don't ever fall for the claim by eBay sellers that their key is a complete replacement to original key by reprogramming it. You will need MB dealer to program an entirely new key and none will use the eBay key you have provided (they will source their own keys and will cost upwards of $500).

Thank you both.

Yes, I'm well aware of the programming and security surrounding these little wonders.

As a mechanic and tinkerer I hope I can pull off a successful organ transfer, but it wouldn't be the first time my trembling hand or misjudgement has cost me $500!

I think it also depends on the key. Keyless-go keys are supposed to be more. Also I hear prices vary by dealer.

Just do me a favor and grab a used OEM key in good condition if you're shopping off eBay. I have gotten several knockoff shells before and they just do not feel right. Very lightweight with cheap material. Sometimes the chip from the old key won't even fit into the new one properly.

Dang it, now you tell me. I just ordered a shell for 14 bucks.

If it's not right, I'll gladly get the OEM. That's what I searched for, not wanting some Chinese crap, so we'll see.

Mine is the keyless-go, so I reminded everyone last night - no losing keys!

Keyless go e350

I just got a 2013 E350 Bluetec used. The cost to replace the keyless go key was $404.30. Benzel Busch in Englewood NJ

what's your car model? And you can search one on website, there are many key shells, and most are cheap.

Success! Those kids in China sent me a perfect copy/replica/real deal for $14.

It looks perfect, and swapping the internals took seconds.

Now, I just have to wait until Jr. gets back from Six Flags so I can function test it and be done.

And since we're talking fobs, what's the deal with the spring-loaded little ring that pops out when you remove the valet key? It sort of supplants the key-ring in the head of the valet key as it's removed?

Just curious.

THE C350
Are you asking why it has the spring loaded thing inside the key?
It is so the valet can put you key on one of the key rings so they can hang it in the box.

I am interested in this as well. My key has broken buttons but works fine. The main irritating thing is the key release is half broken though and it's hard to remove the key.

How does the Chinese housing compare to OEM?

Yeah, you've got to hand it to the Germans, they make great cars.

It looks, feels, and tastes exactly the same!

It works fine, but the key release is actually on the battery holder, so if you need that, you'll have to find a full OEM that's broken or something; it's not included with the shell.

good luck!
