FYI W211 Gas tank seal leaks
I have a 2004 w211 with 65k miles. Recently noticed gas smell inside cabin and outside when parked in the garage. It's mostly noticeable just after a full tank fill. Now I read on here that it's the seals on top of the tank where the sending units are located. I didn't look myself but It's just under the backseat. This seems like a pretty common issue and thus MB has extended the warranty to 15 yrs on the tank and related components for certain W211's or all not sure? After taking mine to the dealer they did confirm it was the seals and they ordered an entirely new gas tank with the sending units and seals already in place. This tells me the new seal replacements are not working. They also said they were glad I didn't remove the covers under the back seat over the sending units as this would of jeopardized my warranty they said. So I guess maybe people are botching the fix and then taking it in when it doesn't work? Anyway just a heads up if you have any of these issues. These cars are getting to the age these problems are becoming more apparent. Anyway I'm glad it's covered and I get a loaner to boot!!

Cant do anything about it? I had to call MB then a local dealer for this. Took some time but will have fixed. Ya know its not a recall right? Its a 15 year extended warranty best can figure out. Check answers to my post a member sent it. Sorry don't know what post.

I recently purchased a 08' E350, noticed a fuel smell the day I picked up the car, the dealer filled the tank before I picked up the car. Took the car back and they replaced the tank. On another note, the engine light came on the next morning too, they ended up replacing all 4 cam magnets too! What a way to start my MB ownership! Should be good to go now I hope?!

Mercedes didn't extend the warranty out of the goodness of their hearts. If it weren't for the NHTSA | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the hard work or so many MB owners here, none of this would have been provided by MB, as evidenced by no where else in the world did they extend that fuel leak warranty. They opted to offer the extended warranty or the NHTSA would have forced a recall on them.

Unfortunately, this warranty wasn't extended into canada. Here's a pic of my leaking seals on my fuel sender unit. I bought new seals off ebay for $12 each. waiting for them to come in. While i wait i just dont fully fill up my car.

I had the same problem on my w211 e320.
I noticed a strong gas smell after a full tank fill. The smell would dissapear after I used a 5th of my full tank.
The gas smell was very stong noticable around the backseat at the drivers side.
Replaced the leaking seal on my fuel sender unit (old seal is black, new seal is green), and the problem is solved.
No gas smell anymore after a full tank fill..

A HUGE Thank You! to all of you for this post. I have a 2008 CLS550 which developed this issue. Thanks to you, I took the car to my San Diego MBZ dealer and they immediately took my car in for service and provided me with a loaner. They were aware of the related gas smell and seal issue. I would have paid my local european car mechanic $550 to repair it, if not for you. Again, thank you all so very much.

I got my seals off eBay. But it turns out that it wasn't my seals causing the issue, it was the fuel sender unit itself which was cracked. Can buy the unit off rockauto but if it's an updated unit you may need to buy the gender Bender dongle of mb as they changed the connector

so my unit leaked after I checked it. From the barb where I added another hose clamp. That seemed to stop it.
then I drove to the gas station and filled up the tank, and onto Home Depot. The car stalled when braking to turn into HD. I got home and there was clean gas inside the lower back half below the seal ring. I started the car and noticed it coming from this second pic. The hose barb and hose didn’t leak anymore. I assume I need a whole new unit or just not fill the tank all the way. Thoughts?

$320 for a fuel sender (left side) fuel pump (right side) two new seals, and one mounting clip/bracket from AutohausAZ. MB world has a great write up; you tube has instructional videos on doing this yourself. gonna do it that way and save nearly $500

Sorry for the super size pics. I ordered the left and right sender/pump units, two new seals and the associated clip and changed out the units myself. I needed an adapter as the new left side unit has a different three pin connection. Got everything super fast from AutohauzAZ. Very glad I did it myself and saved well over $500. I didn't use the clip and am sending it back; probably didn't need the seal either.
