In the 2014 and later, this isn't the case anymore. If you come to a full stop the car will go into 1'st even in "E" mode. You can tell because there is now a display of the current gear on the cluster. I think this was done as a response to the throttle lag which many complained about in earlier models.

If you get in your car and pull on the right hand paddle for a few seconds are you saying that rather than show a D it shows a 1 regardless of whether you are in E or S.
Or, are you telling me that if you shift the left paddle down 7 or 9 times - not sure whether the 2014 has the 7 or 9 speed transmission - it shows 1 where or not it is in E or S.
The latter makes sense as you have manually selected 1st which over rides the E/S selection. You could also down shift to 2nd and start from there as well.
If you go full auto does it actually show the shifts in the dash as the gear progress up automatically?
What am I missing?
Thanks.

I thought about this and I am now not clear so I am going to give you my understanding of what you are telling me.

Second gear starts are very helpful in snow and of course with winter tires fitted will get you out of any number of jams. Can you select second gear for a start or will the newer cars default to 1st no matter what you do?

Have you tried to force a second gear start by selecting it with the paddles? My interest is based on I am thinking of swapping my girls for a Cabriolet.
