Oregonmon's 2015 E350 wagon.
I'd like to use this as a place to put photos, questions and feedback
I got a chance to see what it's like to drive this great car on some back roads yesterday. I had a big smile on my face as I scooted rather quickly from turn to turn. I'm impressed with how light and sporty it felt. Paddle shifts worked well but does anyone know how to force it into manual mode and stay there?

Stopped by a friends small winery Rallison Cellars, if anyone was curious if a wine barrel will fit in the cargo area of a wagon. This answer is yes.

So far the car has proven to be quiet and gentlemanly, practical and fun to drive in anger.
It also looks so damn gorgeous.
Give the windows a slight tint and it really great.
I have over 71,000 miles and it still is a fantastic ride.
Enjoy
I'm interested to hear more about how to work the paddle shifters as well. This wagon will be my first automatic transmission in 20-something years of driving. We often drive in the mountains, and being able to engine brake down long grades is comforting. I know from reading the manual that the paddle shifters can be used for engine braking down grades as well, but I'm interested to hear how this works in practice.
Anyway, congrats again and feel free to keep the photos and observations coming!

Congrats on the order Beemie! You're sure going to enjoy it when it arrives.
Not a great picture but here's the new wagon with it's garage mates.
2005 Porsche C2 and 1990 track/autox prepped 1990 Miata.

Auto parallel parking works well.

What a fantastic drive! It is everything my wife's C300 Sport isn't and the only car I've ever driven that's nicer than our old Audi A6. One of these days...We also happened to have a white Miata that my daughter autocrossed, although hers was a '91 auto. What a great car for a beginning driver, and auto crossing a perfect learning experience for where the edge of control is in a car.
Enjoy your new wagon. It's stunning!
Steve
I really want to put a good coat of Griots wax on. I have been using a Porter Cable 7424XP for the last year for my other cars. But I don't know if I'll get to it before our Thanksgiving trip to Miami.
The little Miata that recently received a 2002 VVT engine got a lot of attention in October but had been neglected the last 2 weeks when the Benz came home. Talk about 2 very different driving experiences.
Here's a engine bay shot after swap.

A coupe of comparison shots. I can't believe how small the Miata looks next to the wagon.

Paddle shifters work great on this car, I don't use them often but they definitely allow you to work higher in the power band. Even in sport mode the shift points on the E are way too low, this keeps the motor quiet, tries hard to keep the revs around 2500.
What they do is actually limit upshifting from the gear selected. so it will still downshift as the revs drop. This is confusing as you'll look down at the selector and it will say D5 when the transmission is actually in 2nd.
The AMG displays the actual gear in the dash display, I'm not sure if the E will do this, I don't use it that often in the 350 or the ML550.
they really need to offer these paddles in aluminum in all models, not just amg. Maybe they do and they simply never come spec'd like that.
From your pics it looks like you live in the NW/Portland area, perhaps Bethany? Anyway, your neighborhood looks like the Bethany neighborhood where I live.
Nice engine swap btw.

I actually live in Tualatin area. Some pics have been downtown but the other pics are at a friends winery on Parrett Mt., Rallison Cellars.
Your pic of the wine barrel inside your car was a cool way to demonstrate the cargo capacity ! And a great way to buy wine !

When I got my 2011 W212 E350 4Matic wagon I did the same thing around the twisties too. Great car.
As to the locking in manual this is a sequential gearbox so you go down and you go up. There are no other paths I know of but perhaps others do.
I find downshifting from 7th-6th-5th to 4th a waste of time. The gear ratios are so close you get very little engine braking at each step and you wait for ever. Make 3 quick flicks of the left paddle and get into 4th asap.
If it is sluggish to shift get your dealer to adjust it with the computer. Mine worked better after my tech did that.
Being in Oregan if you handle inferences are right, you will run into snow now and again. Up here on southern Vancouver Island I run winters on 17" rims vs. the 18" stock wheels. Better ride and handling is about the same. If you have never driven 4Matic it is something you will enjoy in our heavy rain seasons.
Happy motoring.

In E that car starts in 2nd gear even if you have the gear selector set to D or full auto.
If you shift it manually to 1st it is irrelevant as far as I know what the E/S selector is set at. It will override the 2nd gear start and start in 1st.
If you have the E/S in S it starts in 1st gear even with the gear selector in D - full auto.
As to shift points in S vs. E the shift points seem to be much different than in E. Maybe it is my driving style and it has adapted to me but my shift points seem to be around 4000 when in S and 2500-2800 in E. I will have to check more closely.
My 5 spd Tiptronic in the SLK works much the same.
The only way I know of to hold both cars in manual - and cars I have had ahead of the current cars - is to start in the gear you intend to start in and shift where you choose.

I didn't notice that when I was on the driver training course in July with MBC in the 2014 models.
Since 1986 all my cars of course had the 2nd gear start feature including the 2011 but I an see where that issue would arise.
Do you think that is in part at least a driver to the 9 speed transmission so they can recover fuel economy lost by the overcoming the delay with higher revs and power?

I can't believe the way the car starts in 1'st now costs much in the way of mileage because in normal driving it only stays in 1'st for a VERY short time.
