2015 E350 Wagon
Oregonmon's 2015 E350 wagon.

I already made an intro thread and thanks for the warm welcome guys.
I'd like to use this as a place to put photos, questions and feedback
I got a chance to see what it's like to drive this great car on some back roads yesterday. I had a big smile on my face as I scooted rather quickly from turn to turn. I'm impressed with how light and sporty it felt. Paddle shifts worked well but does anyone know how to force it into manual mode and stay there?

Stopped by a friends small winery Rallison Cellars, if anyone was curious if a wine barrel will fit in the cargo area of a wagon. This answer is yes.

Give the windows a tint

I have the same car only it's a 2011.
Give the windows a slight tint and it really great.
I have over 71,000 miles and it still is a fantastic ride.
Enjoy

Congratulations on the awesome wagon, and thanks for the eye candy! I have a 2015 E350 on order and the wait is much harder than I expected, so I am enjoying living vicariously through the lucky folks who already own one.

I'm interested to hear more about how to work the paddle shifters as well. This wagon will be my first automatic transmission in 20-something years of driving. We often drive in the mountains, and being able to engine brake down long grades is comforting. I know from reading the manual that the paddle shifters can be used for engine braking down grades as well, but I'm interested to hear how this works in practice.

Anyway, congrats again and feel free to keep the photos and observations coming!

7 Speed auto trans work well for engine braking and downshifting. It does exactly what you'd expect it to do. Also great for throttle blipping on the AMG and flooring it in tunnels =D

^^ Very cool!

Congrats on the order Beemie! You're sure going to enjoy it when it arrives.

Not a great picture but here's the new wagon with it's garage mates.

What a gorgeous car! I stopped by our local dealer last week because I knew they had a wagon in stock. It was white with pano, just like yours. I just wanted to take a look at it, as I hadn't seen one yet. I told them up front that I wasn't shopping at this time, let alone buying, but they insisted I take it for a drive. OK, twist my arm. What a fantastic drive! It is everything my wife's C300 Sport isn't and the only car I've ever driven that's nicer than our old Audi A6. One of these days...

We also happened to have a white Miata that my daughter autocrossed, although hers was a '91 auto. What a great car for a beginning driver, and auto crossing a perfect learning experience for where the edge of control is in a car.

Enjoy your new wagon. It's stunning!

Thank you thank you!

I really want to put a good coat of Griots wax on. I have been using a Porter Cable 7424XP for the last year for my other cars. But I don't know if I'll get to it before our Thanksgiving trip to Miami.

The little Miata that recently received a 2002 VVT engine got a lot of attention in October but had been neglected the last 2 weeks when the Benz came home. Talk about 2 very different driving experiences.
Here's a engine bay shot after swap.

A coupe of comparison shots. I can't believe how small the Miata looks next to the wagon.

Paddle shifters work great on this car, I don't use them often but they definitely allow you to work higher in the power band. Even in sport mode the shift points on the E are way too low, this keeps the motor quiet, tries hard to keep the revs around 2500.
What they do is actually limit upshifting from the gear selected. so it will still downshift as the revs drop. This is confusing as you'll look down at the selector and it will say D5 when the transmission is actually in 2nd.

The AMG displays the actual gear in the dash display, I'm not sure if the E will do this, I don't use it that often in the 350 or the ML550.

they really need to offer these paddles in aluminum in all models, not just amg. Maybe they do and they simply never come spec'd like that.

Hey Oregonmon,

From your pics it looks like you live in the NW/Portland area, perhaps Bethany? Anyway, your neighborhood looks like the Bethany neighborhood where I live.

Nice engine swap btw.

Yes aluminum would be much nicer. The current gear is shown on the gauges in this car. But confusingly it also show a "next gear and arrow up, 4^. Yeah, I'm a little unsure when it's going to shift or go back to auto mode if I have been paddles shifting for the last minute or so. I would like to know if there is a "stay in manual mode" option.

The 2013 E350 I had would stay in manual mode once selected from the paddle shifters, but that changed in the 2014 E350 I had next. Mercedes changed the trans cal in 2014 and the trans will not stay in manual mode. After some predetermined amount of light throttle, time and/or whatever, the trans will revert back to auto on its own. Sounds the they kept that for 2015, so on the 350 model I do not believe there is a "stay in manual mode". I agree its annoying.

Porter cable.. Forgot about that name.. Its a DA right. It brought back some memories for me.. 7 years ago I used to detail my car. Now I dont anymore. Back then I remember it was like science starting with having a type of mitt with two separate buckets and pressure washer.. Clay bars with quick detailers for lubrication followed by hand wash and drying with certain type of towels I forget. Then came the fun part with porter cable and again my memory fails..certain type of pads using menzerna polish to remove swirls gently and double check with light. Finally collinite wax after some deionized water rinse etc.. There were a lot of products I used including sprays for wheel wells, tire cleaners, interior products etc etc.. Those were the days.. Never got around to trying klasse sealant since I was happy with menzerna/collinite combo. Collinite lasted upto 6 months with few quick detailer maintenance in between.

Paddle Shifters.

First of all congrats. I know that smile.
When I got my 2011 W212 E350 4Matic wagon I did the same thing around the twisties too. Great car.
As to the locking in manual this is a sequential gearbox so you go down and you go up. There are no other paths I know of but perhaps others do.
I find downshifting from 7th-6th-5th to 4th a waste of time. The gear ratios are so close you get very little engine braking at each step and you wait for ever. Make 3 quick flicks of the left paddle and get into 4th asap.
If it is sluggish to shift get your dealer to adjust it with the computer. Mine worked better after my tech did that.
Being in Oregan if you handle inferences are right, you will run into snow now and again. Up here on southern Vancouver Island I run winters on 17" rims vs. the 18" stock wheels. Better ride and handling is about the same. If you have never driven 4Matic it is something you will enjoy in our heavy rain seasons.
Happy motoring.

I am not sure I agree with you but always open.
In E that car starts in 2nd gear even if you have the gear selector set to D or full auto.
If you shift it manually to 1st it is irrelevant as far as I know what the E/S selector is set at. It will override the 2nd gear start and start in 1st.
If you have the E/S in S it starts in 1st gear even with the gear selector in D - full auto.
As to shift points in S vs. E the shift points seem to be much different than in E. Maybe it is my driving style and it has adapted to me but my shift points seem to be around 4000 when in S and 2500-2800 in E. I will have to check more closely.
My 5 spd Tiptronic in the SLK works much the same.
The only way I know of to hold both cars in manual - and cars I have had ahead of the current cars - is to start in the gear you intend to start in and shift where you choose.

Wood all the way for me. Had no choice in the earlier cars and the W211 didn't have it. Couldn't wait to get it in the W212.

In the 2014 and later, this isn't the case anymore. If you come to a full stop the car will go into 1'st even in "E" mode. You can tell because there is now a display of the current gear on the cluster. I think this was done as a response to the throttle lag which many complained about in earlier models.

Don

Thanks for that bit of info.
I didn't notice that when I was on the driver training course in July with MBC in the 2014 models.
Since 1986 all my cars of course had the 2nd gear start feature including the 2011 but I an see where that issue would arise.
Do you think that is in part at least a driver to the 9 speed transmission so they can recover fuel economy lost by the overcoming the delay with higher revs and power?

I see the 9 speed as just natural technical evolution rather than an answer to this specific problem.

I can't believe the way the car starts in 1'st now costs much in the way of mileage because in normal driving it only stays in 1'st for a VERY short time.

Don
