I've been wanting to paint the calipers on my 550 spirt with the VHT burnt orange (same color I'd planned to paint my jeep before ending up selling it).
Car is black... current wheels are the AMG split six, and summer will be either HRE's, Velgen VMB5 or vossen's VFS2s. Likely in a gunmetal variety.
My question is in regards to painting the calipers. The front pair as you know are substantial and would offer a good appearance. I'm just curious if you think the rear are going to look ridiculous and cheap. I have no intentions of upgrading the calipers.
Paint all four calipers the same color. Yes the rear calipers do look cheap but as you said, you have no intention of upgrading them and they will look better painted than OEM color.
Calipers will definitely look better when painted, although i am not sure that your choice of paint colour will be suitable for black car , but hey , this is your car I recently had my calipers painted with matte black , IMHO looks better than before and doesn't attract too much attention

Yeah, I'm sure it's not for everyone... quick Google search yielded a photo very close to the color scheme I'm going to end up with. Personally I like it!
this is goin against my will but...i agree with Tony on this. the rear calipers a bit small but would look hideous if you dont paint them all in the same color.
with the burnt orange. that will look great on your black car especially when you have aftermarket wheels. so what if its a bit different. thats how you stand out from the crowd. dont try to blend in, be different. besides, you can always paint over it if you dont like it.
EDIT: ^ we were posting at the same time...now that photo you found...nice! although i would prefer a lighter colored wheels.
The Velgen have a lighter color hue to them... Vossen as well... a big part of my color choice has to do with bringing some color/contrast to the car. I love the gunmetal on black, but feel the bright paint will make it pop a bit and not look like my intention was a full blown "murdered out" appearance which is not my intention...
Final wheel decision may come down to finding a great deal/used, otherwise the Velgen will be my choice.
very nice design and very open too. you really need to paint them calipers to burnt orange. just make sure you use a top coat for a shiny finish and to protect from brake dust. and dont forget to post pics!

It sure looks good but these are big AMG brakes , your E550 has much smaller calipers . it's not the caliper color i am concerned about, its caliper appearance inside the wheel, but again , its just me
So if your wheels will be larger then 18" it will look kind of like this picture.

Fortunately I'm planning a wheel with a bit more going on. I agree the 5 spoke wouldn't look as ideal with caliper size. Being that I am not tracking the car, stock calipers offer me enough performance. The cost of a brake upgrade just isn't worthwhile to me for sheerly looks (3-4k if I was lucky, and 2k if I got a missed ebay auction type of deal from what I've seen).
And the thought you had was precisely the same as me in regards to size, especially in the rear. I almost feel like it's drawing attention to the miniscule tail end components...

That is the same colour I am planning to do for my E550 from VHT burnt orange or bronze they call it. If you do, please post up some pics. Definitely will look a lot nicer to go with your new wheel set ups.

I will once I get a chance to do it! If I can source the paint locally, I may be able to knock it out next weekend.... If not, I'll be in a holding pattern with the GF being in town for the next month.... Fingers crossed.

18 hour work days the past 2 weeks have been killing me. I'm going to call around tomorrow (hopefully) and see if I can find the paint. I'll order up some new decals for the front as well.
burnt orange is a great color. I choose that same color as well when i did a e63 brake swap on my e350 a few years back. I really love the clean classly look but still pops a little. I am planning to switch the color up soon because too many other cars have the same color as well (nissan) and i'm just trying to stand out a little bit. not a great shot but here is a more recent picture
I hadn't noticed you'd painted them that color but I've seen your car a handful of times on here. Thank you for the photo and the entire vehicle looks great!
I think a sunburst bold yellow pearl could look great. I'd actually considered that... cure time is my big obstacle....I can chuck it on the lift, pulls the wheels and pull the calipers off to paint, preferably still on the hoses.... but 24 hours without my car could be tough!
What do you guys think about yellow or florencent green?
imo, yellow is like red, overused. fluorescent green on the other hand, only if you have the big AMG or brembo brakes. i used orange on my sedan and somewhat petronas green on my coupe. i left the 63 stock silver though. but its just me.
I just used red caliper paint from auto zone. if you really want the best paint get G2 or Eastwood caliper paint. I used spray paint because its getting cold here in Cleveland I got no time to do it. it was quick job but looks good. I used wired brush and sandpaper and after I sprayed it with brake cleaner and taped everything I dodnt want tp be painted before I sprayed. Spray few light coats don't go crazy on it they do dry fast. enjoy!!!
I'm planning on a VERY thorough cleaning... taping things off, brake cleaner, rubbing alcohol, primer, paint, and clear (all of a caliper/engine enamel variety). I'll apply the new decals post paint but pre clear I think?
Few years back I painted calipers on W219 using Dupli-Color BCP403 Silver Brake Caliper Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000B6DG54..._tgLlwbFV355BH and got great results . This time I took it to the shop and according to them they used " High Temp Permanent Ceramic Coating " and vinyl decals.
