Question Outside Ambient Air Display

Something strange that I had noticed about my display lately, it might have always been like that.

If the car is parked for a long time the display starts changing immediately but if I have parked for a short time the display does not move for several minutes.

Example from other day . Started car in the garage and display showed 22.5c backed out of garage put car in drive and the display started to drop immediately to 17.5c. I drove to my fitness class and car reached 18.5c when I parked . Came out 2 hours later and car still showed 18.5c ( it was warmer than that) drove app 2 kilometres and suddenly the display increased quickly to 23.0 c and for drive home it fluctuated between 23 and 22.5 c. .

I thought it may be where I parked because of the morning sun but I have parked with the back of the car facing the sun and at different angles . works the same on cloudy days so not the sun.

Climate control is not affected and operates normally.

Oh if it is the sensor where is it located ?

Ambient temp sensor? Check if this provides a clue:

Hope it not the sensor but it seems strange that the car has to sit before it resets it self.

Going to dealer for airbag recall so will ask about the price. Will not get them to do it LOL.

I know M-B never over complicates things unnecessarily but... maybe the system takes into account the engine off time. If the engine was running recently and then shut off, when the vehicle is parked, the temp. display sensor may be subject to heat-soak from the engine or radiator, if it's located in the vicinity. That could cause inaccurate temp. readings for a while so it could be that temp. measurements are ignored for a pre-determined time after the engine is shut off. Instead, the last accurate reading of ambient temperature continues to be displayed - for a period of time.

I guess, I think the sensor is in the mirror . I know it is slow to update and it averages temps . The mirror holds heat . I’ve had mine not update for 30 minutes at least.

It wouldn't make any sense to put it in the mirror or any other location that holds heat.

"In the mirror" ???? Incorrect information!!

My post includes a link explaining where the sensor is. I just went out into the garage, got down and looked just below / behind the front license plate ... there it is - about 4 inches behind the plate, mounted just above the front lower splash guard.

For those that prefer a video, here's one 2 minutes long

I took a look and I can see the sensor where @calder-cay said.

My Land Rover had the sensor in the mirror.

In the outside mirror housing or mounted to the outside of the outside mirror housing?

The problem with being retired for 3+ years now, is I get bored. Grocery shopping done.

You won't believe this, but I did a search for "Land Rover ambient sensor location" and every post and video shows it in a similar location as the GLK - behind the grill. I even added "mirror" to the search and nothing definitive showed up.

I know this isn't an LR forum, so off-topic, but was curious. To me, behind the grill is an obvious location to place it. No doubt other auto makers place it similarly. Putting it in an outer mirror subjects it to direct sunlight ... plus can be easily damaged.

Some Ferraris have the ambient air temp. sensor on the bottom of the driver's side mirror. Don't know why. My thoughts/concerns are like yours - direct sunlight and possible damage.

Photo shows the sensor... little black "button" on the bottom of the mirror.

It was somewhere on the mirror of my Volvo XC90...
(I think: I can't find any documentation...)

If Volvo did that it's probably a legit choice and there's no doubt a valid reason, of some sort.

My Saab had it behind the front bumper.

My Schwinn 10 speed has one approximately 3/4 of the way between the seat and bars, just above the top tube and headset.

My 1967 VW Beetle had one outside. You licked one of your fingers and stuck it out the window.

Okay, never had a '67 Beetle but kind of keen on getting one...

In side the mirror housing, a few members had problems but it was accurate. I think Land Rover wanted it high up when the car was in deep water.

Interesting point regarding the water. Having said that, Ferrari have used the mirror location, on at least some of their models, for at least 30 years. Ferraris are meant to stay out of deep water, I would hope :-)

I have been monitoring the sensor. If the car is stopped for a short period of time ( not sure how long ) it takes 5 minutes to update each time. So probably a design to not show a huge temperature and effect the A/C or fuel supply.

I think the only thing that sensor can affect is the driver, and maybe the passengers.
