Help! M278 oil filter??

First time changing the oil on my "14 e550...when I removed the oil filter it came out with the cap....the new one I installed into the cap then tightened it down into the housing...I just wanna make sure I'm doing it right...

Am I supposed to install the oil filter into the stem first? Or installing it into the cap then tightening it down is ok?

Thanks guys!

Filter must be installed into the cap first - there are clips on filter's closed end that must engage into recess area on bottom/inside of the cap. Once its engaged, its safe to install on stem and tighten down.
